Comments: I was a storekeeper in the Supply department from November 1954 through July 1957. I made 2 WestPac cruises in 1955 and 1956-57. The last cruise turned out to be an around the world cruise because of the Suez Crisis and tin cans needing supplies, fuel, etc located in the Persian Gulf. Would like to correspond with shipmates of that time period. Larry Dilts SK2

Comments: I am in the process of writing an autobiography and part of it is devoted to the time I spent in the navy aboard the USS Prairie from 1951-1954. If there is anyone that was aboard her during that time and has something of interest to add I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks Carl

Comments: My dad James Stavros served on the USS Prarie during the Korean War. He was injured July 29, 1952. He had been welding in the ship's boar when there was an explosion and was injured in the face and shoulder and lost sight of his left eye. He was later transfered to Oak Knoll where he remained for about a year before coming home. We would appreciate any contact with ship mates that might remember him. please email me. thank you!!

Comments: I was onboard the Prairie in 1985 with 2 overseas deployments. I was just recently diagnosed with Lung Cancer and given between 6 months- 1 year to live. I don't smoke and have no family history of the disease. I can only link it to asbestos exposure during my time onboard. Does anybody have information regarding incidence of Lung Cancer onboard the ship?

Michael Basques wrote on 2003-02-19 17:39:54.0

Comments: Dear : USS PRAIRIE AD-15 Crewmen:

I found your name on a list of USS PRAIRIE crew members on the USS PRAIRIE Ship's Roster internet website. Our firm represents the family of Mr. James Williford who served with you on board the USS PRAIRIE in the 1960's as a Boiler Technician.

I am writing this letter to ask for your help. Mr. James Williford recently was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a form of cancer that the doctors agree was caused by Mr. James Williford's occupational exposure to asbestos. He and his family are now involved in an asbestos lawsuit, against the manufacturers, suppliers and civilian contractors. We are not pursuing the government in this action.

Unfortunately, Mr. James Williford does not know the names of all of the various asbestos containing materials and the equipment that were used on the USS PRAIRIE. You may remember asbestos-containing products, such as:

-asbestos pipe insulation, -asbestos cement/mud -asbestos canvas or cloth -asbestos block boiler insulation, -valve packing, -pump and flange gaskets, -interior boiler refractory, -floor tile, -asbestos insulated wire, electrical panels with Bakelite insulators, -laminate asbestos board for bulkhead panels and ceiling panels

Do you remember any of the brand names: -Kaiser V-Block Refractory, used in the boilers -Eagle-Picher, -Johns Manville, -Combustion Engineering, Foster Wheeler, Babcock & Wilcox, Cleaver-Brooks, Riley Stoker boilers -Flexitalic, John Crane and Garlock packing and gasket products. -Union Carbide Bakelite electrical insulation board, electrical components -Westinghouse, Micarta covered asbestos bulkhead panels -Cutler-Hammer, Square-D, Westinghouse, Alan-Bradley, and General Cable electrical components, switch gear, control panels, cable and wire. -GE and Westinghouse Turbines

Do you remember which repair yards the USS PRAIRIE put into during the time you served on board this ship. Finally, if you recall any of the civilian contractors that worked on the USS PRAIRIE when she was repaired or overhauled please contact me.

Any information you can provide regarding this ship is extremely important to Mr. James Williford. Please contact me at my email address mbasques@braytonlaw.com; call me at (800) 765-7778 extension 342, or write me at James Williford, c/o Brayton * Purcell, 222 Rush Landing Road, Novato, CA 94945. I thank you in advance for your help.

Sincerely,

Mike Basques Investigator

Hey, we had to be eligible for combat zone pay, too. Normally, we
just entered combat zone waters and had GQ exercises and returned to
Sasebo.

Once we moored in Pusan, I took liberty and met my brother-in-law, who
was a MSGT USAF, and he took me to his air base (K6 or K9, I think)
where he maintained B25s. Can you imagine a sailor (Fireman) in liberty
uniform going around meeting TSGTs and MSGTs living in barracks where
the ground was dry and dusty. They offered me hard liquor which came
out of their personal lockers and I ate lunch/dinner there. The Jeep
ride was fun, I did not see PUSAN or any liberty places in the area.

I think that one of the other ADs conducted some shore bombardment in
Korea but the Prairie did not while I was aboard.

I served on the USS Prairie AD15 from April of 1953 until April 1955. I
was a storekeeper (SK2) there. During my time on the ship, President &
Mrs. Sigmund Rhee same aboard ship to thank the captain and crew for
assistance to the ROK naval vessels engaged in firing against communist
shore batteries.

The Prairie was given the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the
shipboard members received the UN defense service medal.

I would like to get in touch with other ship's crew members. Are there
any reunions going on anywhere?

Contact me at home or through the Korean War Museum in Tuscola,
