Seaplane rescue by the USS Polaris

David Lowes wrote on 2005-11-21 16:16:33.0

Comments: My father, Lt jg Leonard W. Lowes, was on a PBY seaplane enroute from Okinawa to Hawaii to join the planning session for the invasion of mainland Japan when the plane developed mechanical problems and went down. Later in the day the USS Polaris, while running evasive tactics spotted the downed aircraft and, at great risk to themselves, rescued the 29 men on board the PBY. First of all as an aviator and a son, thank you! Also while on the Polaris my dad was introduced to another sailor from Cape Girardeau, MO. Dad couldn't remember the sailors name, only that his family owned the Buckner-Ragsdale clothing store in Cape. I would like to hear from anyone who has information on this event or the young sailor from Cape. Thank you again, and if you are ever in the area, please contact me and I will tell my dad. Cape Girardeau is located on the Mississippi River about half way between St Louis MO and Menphis TN.

Comments: Ed Weaver served as a boiler tender on the Polaris from May 1952 - January 1956. Unfortunately, Ed died of mesothelioma, an asbestos-related cancer, in August of 2003. We represent Ed's widow and children, and we're trying to locate any of Ed's shipmates who might have information regarding boilers or any other equipment or asbestos-containing products to which Ed was exposed while onboard the Polaris. If you have information, or know someone who might, please call me at 1-800-981-4001, ext. 175, or email me at rwebb@levinslaw.com. Thanks!
