Comments: I have a copy of a letter of commendation that my Grandfather received for his part in the salvaging and lifting of the USS PITTSBURGH bow from the water. The commendation was signed by T.C. Gray, Acting Industrial Mananer. He states that is was a major undertaking. The actual lifting of the bow form the water was well planned and the execution thereof was an excellant sample of team work by riggers, divers and the operating crew of the YD-135. He also says that each man who has had a part should take personal pride in having done his share. If anyone remembers My Grandfather I would appreciate any information you might have.

Comments: I have recently run across a photo in a very old album of my family's. It shows a long line of sailors dressed in white navy hats, dark dickies and pants, thick belts, and boots (spats) to their knees. There is what appears to be a Navy band. They are standing under a store sign "The Paris Drapery House", "Pacific Building Company Main Office". There are also train/trolley tracks in the street and what appears to be a trolley #1 waiting for the parade to pass. All the info the picture has is written "Crew in parade of U.S.S. Pittsburg San Deigo". Does anyone have any information on when this might be?

Comments: My Dad is still here and kicking. He was a crewman on the CA72 heavy crusier from 1944-1947. He has a few pictures and a lot of stories. He was there during the typhoon and when they got the Presidents Unit Citation for towing the USS Franklin.
He does not use a computer so if you want to get any information to him or from him you will need to E-mail me. PLEASE put USS Pittsburg in the subject line so I do not delete it.

It includes photos of Divisions and many of the ships operations and stops. Comments: My father Troy Lee Beasley was on the Pittsburgh during WWII. From the time she was comissioned in Baltimore til sometime after she was hit by the typhoon.T
he line that towed the Franklin went out over his gunnery station. His best friend was a man I know only as Tourville. If anyone knows anything about anyone on the ship during that time please let us know.
Thanks, Cathy Sidrer
Cathy sends this tribute for her Dad:
Subject: A Tribute to Troy Lee Beasley
I lost my Daddy April 6, 2003 at the age of 77. He was my my hero, my friend and mentor.
He would talk for hours about the times he spent on the USS Pittsbugh during WWII. The good times he had and, of course, the bad. These are things he would not discuss with even my Mother.
I truly cherished these times with him. He was not a war hero, but he was mine.
He was a building contractor, an avid fisherman and gardener.
He gave of himself and had no enemies. As a member of the New Garden Moose Lodge if something need to be done, there was little discussion, but within a few days they found it was done.
He loved to fish with my Uncle Charlie, and did so 3-4 times a week. On many occasions they gave their daily catch to someone else.
His gardens were known throughout the county. He never sold anything from them, but gave away. Luscious tomatoes, squash, cucumbers and many other types of fresh vegetables, too numerous to list, to friends and people he didn't even know until that time.
He taught me to hunt, fish, build things with my hands and mind. He was proud of my talents in school and work. He may not have shown it in conventional ways, but when a master builder comes to his daughter to draw plans for a gazebo, that he could only vision, see it on paper, and know it is right, the pride was there.
Was he a war hero ? No. Was he a Superman ? No. He was just a man, a Daddy and a husband who put others before himself. A man who loved his family and fellow man.
I miss and love you Daddy. Your Daughter, Cathy Beasley Sidrer
