Grandfather

Comments: My grandfather, Charles Smith served on the USS Perkins, years unknown to me, but I assume he was serving sometime in the late 50's and early 60's before his death in (I assume) 1962. I just want to know if anyone knew him, remembers him, would happen to have a picture of him or anything of the sort. Thanks for any information!

Comments: I SERVED IN THE SHIP'S OFFICE OF THE USS PERKINS DDR 877 FROM 1956-1957. EARLY IN 1957 I WAS TRANSFERRED TO WORK FOR COMMODORE BENJAMINE P FIELDS(COMDESRON1)ABOARD THE USS PARKS. SHORTLY AFTER I ARRIVED ON THE PARKS IT COLLIDED WITH A CRUISER DURING DRILLS SO THE COMMODORE'S SMALL STAFF WAS TEMPORILY TRANSFERRED TO THE PERKINS. I FINISHED MY NAVY STINT WORKING FOR ADMIRAL JOHN MCCAIN JR. (SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN'S DAD), AT THE PENTAGON.

Perkins DDR877 The Book

Comments: My uncle William C. Warwick was the coxswain onboard the Perkins DDR877 in 1950. I am currently typing his manuscript for a book about his experiences aboard ship and during the time he hitchhiked across country on leave. The book has much in regard to a Korean mission and life onboard ship during a difficult period. If anyone is interested in purchasing a copy of this book upon its release the first part of 2007, please email me and we will make sure a copy is made available. ABOARD USS PERKINS 1950-1953

Comments: I am proud to have served on the Perkins for a little over 3 years during the war. It was a great experience for a 17 year old kid to grow up on the Perkins. My closest friend was a retread from WW2 by the name of Bill Names. There were a lot of great guys on the ship at that time. I am nearly 70 so many of my old shipmates are really getting up there - especially the WW2 Navy Reserves called back to service at the start of the war. I would love to hear from anyone from the Perkins - especially those that were there when I was. Good luck to all the Perkins crew wherever they may be!
