| THOMAS ULMER wrote on December 22, 2000 City and State: MURPHYSBORO IL Unit: QUARTERMASTER/SIGNALMAN Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN - KOREA Comments: Was transferred to LST 1080 in November from the USS Talladega APA 208 while in Mare Island shipyards. Reported aboard over the noon hour and went to painting at 1300 hrs. Even the leading PO was painting. He was a 1c and I was 2c. We sailed from Mare Island to San Diego and tied up to a pier just before Christmas. The captain, a lieutenant, brought a M1 up to the bridge on the way to San Diego for target practice on seagulls. Our boiler burned up and we had to wait for one to be shipped from Pennsylvania so we were at the pier until I left the ship in the last of February for discharge. One Sunday morning, the cook came chasing a radioman from New Jersey with a butcher knife. He made a few passes at his belly but never made contact. There was a radioman from North Carolina that hocked his wedding band so he could have some liberty. I hope he got it back before he went home. I would like to get in contact with those two. We made a night landing off Camp Pendleton and the navigator and I didn't get the message out soon enough to drop the stern anchor and we hit the beach. The Bosun realized it and cranked the anchor back up, but the flag aboard had some words for the Captain. I slept under the hatch toward the stern on the port side. It was like sleeping under the stars. I have a picture of the ship I took from the harbor cruise boat before I left San Diego, if you are interested in having it. Keywords: |
