| ROBERT RIMAR wrote on August 10, 2009 City and State: DANVILLE CA Unit: Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: I recently discovered that my father, Jonah "Arnold" Rimar (now deceased) served very briefly as a Seaman Apprentice on PCE(C)-898 in 1951. I'd be very interested to talk to anyone that might remember him or anyone that could give me any background about what the ship was like and what actions it might have been involved in during that time period. I am especially interested in where the ship was home ported as I was later stationed in Yokosuka, Japan aboard USS Midway CV-41. Thanks, Robert Rimar Keywords: USS PCEC-898, Family Member, 1951, |

| SANFORD STONE wrote on October 1, 2008 City and State: ALEXANDRIA VA Unit: USS PCEC-898 Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN Comments: I served aboard the USS PCEC-898 from Jan. 55' to June 55" as a Seaman Apprentice. The 898 was home-ported at Brooklyn Navy Yard as a reserve training ship. It had 4 officers, 4 chiefs and about 50 enlisted personnel. We steamed to the Caribbean on two week training cruises and spent about a month in port before going out again. In June 55', I was transferred to the USS Rizzi DE-531, also a reserve training ship out of Brooklyn Navy Yard. I was told the 898 was to be de-comminished or transferred to the South Korean Navy. | FRED SIMMONS wrote on November 15, 2007 City and State: GLENDALE CA Unit: USS PCEC 898 Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN Comments: I would be pleased to hear from anyone who served on PCEC during tht period or who might remember me. I am presently a LTJG USNR Retired, but I have been a practicing lawyer in Los Angeles for almost the last fifty years. At the time the ship may have seemed a hellhole to some on board, but memory of bad times is clouded in one's old age, and the good times remain vivid in my memory. If anyone recalls me, I would like to discuss that period. Fred Simmons Keywords: I was assigned to service on PCEC 898 directly from Officer Candidate School as a green Ensign. I served on the ship from 1953 until the ship returned to Hunter's Point in San Francisco where the ship was decommissioned in about 1955. |

| RUSSELL RIGGAN wrote on February 6, 2006 City and State: SAN ANTONIO TX Unit: Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: Leonard Powell, of Littleton, Colorado, formerly part of crew of USN PCEC 896, and PCEC 898, Died on 20.January 2006. He was buried in Littleton, Colorado, with full military honors. I am sad to report this, but am glad to report that "Rog" was able to open up about his service in the U.S. Navy during Korean War. Please note, He had a bumper sticker on his car stating he was a proud Korean War veteran, and served in this "forgotten war". He is now gone, but not forgotten, and his service is not forgotten. He finished a scrapbook detailing his Naval service shortly before his death. I am glad he did. Keywords: PCEC 896, PCEC 898 |
