Comments: I have a couple of entries below but please note my new email address. I am still looking for people who knew my Dad. I have many pictures of Shellback Ceremony, Foreing Pacific Ports, etc. Some names are: (and please note the spellings may not be correct) Ousey (Lt. Cmdr), Lauer, Piper, Jordan. MESS COOKS: Dennis Buchan, Brown, "Red" Hopper, "Nose" Davis. Other names are Diodorf (that is spelled wrong, I am missing letters), Landrum, Newlon, Murdock, McGee, Fitzwater. "Royal Queen" Hansen (Shellback Ceremony) and Lt. Remmen "King Neptune". Again I have many more. I believe it was 1950, 51, and/or 52. Thank you all!

Comments: My father, Jack Blonsick, was a JO on the Ozbourn DD846 during the Korean War. I am looking for information regarding the Ozbourn's participation in atomic testing during the 1950s. Also, there is a reference to an Ozbourn boat crew rescuing a downed pilot from a mine field and that the boat officer received the Bronze Star as a result = does anyone know the boat officer's name?
My father is dying of liver/pancreatic cancer and we are trying to close some open chapters in his life.
Thank you.

More info on Frank J. Colbert, corrections |

Theresa Colbert wrote on 2006-01-09 17:41:17.0
Comments: I need to correct some things from my previous entry. I was mistaken about my Dad, Frank J. Colbert (retired MCPO), being Petty Officer 3rd class on the Ozbourn. I guess I mixed up the ships on which he served. Dad said that his rank on the Ozbourn was "SOSN" - Sonar Seaman. Besides sonar, he worked on the GQ as a 2nd loader for the 40 mm guns and did Watches for the CIC. He came aboard some time in June 1948, was there the night of the accident in the China sea in November 1948, and was among those put on board the USS John W. Thomason as a skeleton crew in March 1949 when that ship was recommissioned. He was glad to hear about this website. I hope someone recognizes his name and responds. One more thing from Dad -and I stand corrected- never call a ship a "boat", as I did in my first entry. I think I have it straight now. Is there anyone around who served with my Dad? I'm sure he'd like to hear from anyone who's still around. If you post it on this site, I'll forward him the information.

My Dad, Frank Colbert, USN, served on the Ozborne |

Theresa Colbert wrote on 2006-01-08 19:50:23.0
Comments: My Dad, retired MCPO Frank J. Colbert, served on the USS Ozborne when he was a Petty Officer 3rd class from 1948 to 1949. He is still around, excellent memory, at 81 and told me about the night the Ozborne had her "nose" cut off during one night in the China sea. There were four boats in formation. The Ozborne was the 3rd. According to Dad, someone was asleep and didn't get the signal to turn, so the 4th boat ended up slicing through the prow of his ship. It had to be towed up to Sing Chow for repairs. I have a picture he lent me which I could email you if someone is interested. Dad never forgot that night -said a couple of sailors were lost, too, in that accident. He recalls seeing something large floating in the water and he and his buddies thought it was a plane until they realized that it was the prow of the ship! He told me the spelling was "Ozborne", I don't know if it's right, but he remembered her number: 846. Oh, my Dad, he's a real piece of living history and I am so proud of him and his service and to all you shipmates who served with him, a sincere "thank you"! By the way, Dad did his next stint in the China Sea during the Korean conflict on the USS Fletcher 445 DD-DDE. He came aboard a Petty Officer 3rd Class and left it at 2nd Class.
