My Time On the Flightdeck

Comments: As I look back on those years of 1954 thru, perhaps, 1957 - - - the work we did and the hours we worked on the flightdeck - - for the pay we received - - - well, we were some pretty terrific group of young men, and we should be proud of the fine job we did. I am very proud to have served with all those young men of V-1 Div., on the flightdeck of the USS Oriskany. She was called the Mighty 'O' for a reason. Comments: Oriskany ; late 48-early 50's; looking for someone who can share a story about my dad John Freehan; the recent activity around the reef project has brought to mind some memories; he recalls being on board (and likely where he shuldn't have been with a buddy); when a plane landing on deck crashed..unfortunatley i believ pilot was killed...other info from my dad is sketchy

Comments: i was just talking with my grndmother over easter and we got talking about my grand father James J Krier and his service in the navy . he pasted away in Nov of 2002 and never really got to talk to him about it and i was just wondering if anyone remembers him also i found out that he served on the big o with his brother inlaw juinor johnstone any stoies will be great

Ray Sewell, Navy Buddy

Comments: Ray Sewell served aboard the Mighty O during the years 1953 to about 1955, but was assigned TAD to Special Services at NAS Norfolk, VA from 1953 to about 1954 as an Olympic Weightlifter, where we became good friends. I've been trying to locate Ray for about 40 years and just learned today the name of the ship he was on before coming to Special Services. Ray was originally from Cleveland, OH and was a top wrestler @ West Tech High School, in Cleveland and won the Jr. National Weightlifting Championships in 1949 in the 132lb class. If anyone remembers Ray I would like to hear from you. Bob Wachter

TIME WELL SPENT AND REMEMBERED ON THE MIGHTY ' O '. I SERVED 1954 THRU 1956-57.

Comments: My formative years were in good hands with my shipmates in V-1 Division aboard the Mighty "O". I was surrounded by and lived with good young men that I have never forgotten. After the navy I took the discipline I learned on the flightdeck and entered college and graduated with a degree which translated into a career in law enforcement and 35 years in private business. Like you, I miss my youth and I miss those that I served with aboard Oriskany. We were young, we were eager and we did an important job. I'm pleased to be contacted by any of my fellow shipmates.

Comments: I boarded Oriskany Brooklyn Feb 1952. We visited Rio de Janerio then went around Cape Horn to Pacific ocean. Had liberty in Valpriso, Chile & Lima Peru. then on to San Diego, Hawaii,Yokuska Japan then to Korea. After our tour of duty came Back to Calif. Would like to hear from other OI Div shipmates. Comments: I was on the ship when the movie Bridges of Tokori was filmed. My best fiend was Donald Bellemy of Myrtle Beach , South Carolina. Does anyone know where he is? Would like to see all my old buddies.

Keywords: My wife and I made a trip to Corpes Cristy, Tx. Found the Oriskany just off 37 South, exit Corn Product Rd. and go left on upriver road, then right on suntide and right on marvinberry rd. It is on the canal. Bought back lots of memories. I was on the ship form 1953 til 1956.

Comments: Yesterday,I observed the Oriskany leave Beaumont,Tx.for her final resting place,to be sunk in the Gulf nearby,to build a reef for the fish.The photo and writeup is in the Beaumont Enterprise newspaper today 1/20/04
