Comments: My father in law, Ervin Van Buren, served on the USS Newport.

He said he was on board when the Newport when it was damaged from a mine. He was in a Oakland, Ca. hospital and was medically discharged.

Ervin is alive, he is 78 years old, and is in fair health.
He lives in Norfolk, Nebraska. He was from Oneill, Nebraska when he entered the Navy.

Ervin said he did not receive a Purple Heart for his injuries.

Can you lend us any information about the USS Newport?
