| KATHRYN HARE wrote on April 26, 2009 City and State: Unit: Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: Joe Merrill, born in Laurel Hill, Fla., on Oct. 7, 1918, passed away April 22, 2009, at the age of 90. He was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran. While in the Navy he served on cruiser USS Northampton, battleship USS Iowa in World War II, aircraft carrier USS Boxer in World War II, destroyer USS Eversole, patrol frigate USS Newport during the Korean War, and aircraft carrier USS Forrestal. He completed his Navy career at the Nuclear Weapons Training Center in Norfolk, Va., and retired in August 1961. Mr. Merrill was preceded in death by his wife, Nora Merrill. He is survived by a son, Joseph "Joe" Merrill and Cynthia of Biglerville, Pa.; a daughter, Kathryn Hare and Mike of Charles Town, W.Va.; grandchildren, Chris and Erin Hare; brothers, Virgil Merrill and Dan Merrill; and sisters, Betty Tunnage, Dorothy Thompson and Tilly Baumgardner. A time of visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Whitehurst-Powell Funeral Home in Crestview, Fla. The funeral will take place on Monday, April 27, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Donnie Cadenhead officiating. Burial will follow in Almarante Cemetery. He said he was on board when the Newport when it was damaged from a mine. He was in a Oakland, Ca. hospital and was medically discharged. Ervin is alive, he is 78 years old, and is in fair health. He lives in Norfolk, Nebraska. He was from Oneill, Nebraska when he entered the Navy. Ervin said he did not receive a Purple Heart for his injuries.
