Comments: I was assigned to the USS Mindoro in August 1952 after serving 90 days of mess cooking at Bainbridge, Md. right out of boot camp. I picked up the ship in Norfolk, Va. I was thrilled to death to be aboard her, and looked forward to a long career in the Navy. Unfortunately, while underway to Operation Mainbrace, I became pretty sick, and was diagnosed with Viral Pneumonia with a lesion on my left lung. Because I tested positive for TB, they had to take me off the ship in Edinboro Scotland. Long story short, they put me on the retired list, and my days of glory were all over. I wasn't aboard long enough to make any close buddies, and can't remember any names. But,I still have my Mighty Minnie Zippo lighter, and pictures of the ship. Go Navy !

Comments: I am sorry to announce that "Billy D" Gore from Tennessee will soon pass on to heaven. He was my father. He fought a very long battle with Alzheimer's, such a cruel disease for anyone but particularly my father. I am so proud of him. His intellect, steadfastness, strength and character have been an impossible task to emmulate. I loved him very much and I have missed him for a very long time. If anyone can offer any information about his time in the service my family would be very appreciative.

Comments: I flew missions from the Mindoro during Operation Mainbrace, the big NATO Navy exercise in the North Sea in 1952. Our mission was to keep track of Russian Submarines operating out of their Baltic Bases. My crew and I had some pretty hairy "dark and stormy" night missions. Most memorable was the night we lost all communications with the ship and were saved by an alert Scotland radar operator who identified us on his scope and vectored me back for a safe landing. We did lose one of our aircraft and the 3-man crew shortly before my incident, and I am wondering if anyone remembers the identity of that pilot and two crewmen. I do remember we spent a good part of the next day searching the area of last contact. Thanks, Lee Klein

Keywords: I came across a picture of the Mindoro in the book "Beautiful Crescent, A Hstory of New Orleans".It is a graet picture of CVE 120 docked close to the foot of Canal Street, with a destroyer and two submarines docked ahead of her. I had to look up the ship's number because there was no ID for the CVE. I was just trying to find out when the picture was taken and to see if I was around at the time of the port vist. I grew up in New Orleans. The best I can tell is that it may be around 1951, by the look of the cars. Does anyone have any information about a New Orleans port call by Mimdoro and the three other ships, at that time? Thanks, Al Flattery, Jr.

Comments: My Dad was in the Navy from 1950 to 1954 and was attached to the USS Mindoro as an air controlman. I'd like to find out the dates he was assigned to the USS Mindoro. He was a very good baseball player and I see references to the ship's baseball team. I'm sure he played for the ship's team, probably as a pitcher. Any information about my Dad or where I might get more info would be greatly appreciated.
Dad passed away from cancer in 1989 at the age of 58.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Comments: Hi All I was a member of the first squadron VMF 225 to operate off the USS Mindoro. A young Marine fresh out of Boot camp and newly assigned to a Marine Squadron VMF 225 at Miramar in the fall of 1945. We boarded the Mindoro at San Diego and sailed with her through the Canal to Guantanomo Bay for Fleet Manuevers. An interesting sidelight we launched several planes to join in the air search for the 4 Marine TBF lost at sea in 1945. After the shakedown and manuvers the ship was sent to the Brooklyn Navy yard and part of the squadron remained aboard the rest going to Cherry Point the New home station. After the navy yard we operated out of Norfolk VA for about 18 months VMF 225 staying with the Mondoro for another 2 years before changing desiginations. I went on to radio/radar school becoming one of the first flight radarman operating out of a combat aircraft in the Corps. ( first aircraft WAS A f7f TWIN ENGINE NIGHT FIGHTER, this plane was to hot & heavy for the CVE to handle ) we later switched to the Sky raider, then to the A4d, You need to remember this was in the days before radar was in the fighters and our desigination was to lead the fighters to target aquistion. I had the opportunity to go aboard the Mindoro when she operated in the Korean conflict for a short stay, still using the Piston engine corsair for ground support of the troops.
