Comments: In 1967 I found a coin/medallion from the USS Merrick AKA97 in a sand dune when a neighborhood was dredged up from the ocean and have kept it all these years in hopes that it could be identified. It also turns out that Walter Reed is a realtive of mine on my mothers side. FINALLY, I found info on the internet. If anyone can help with more info, please email me back. I would love to talk.

Comments: I was on the Merrick from 11-58 to 6-66. B division. Have some pictures of those times. Some of the engine room. Looking for Paul Powers (Putterbutt) ET2 and anyone from B division. I mremember Martin, Bell, Hill, Federis, Kinder (who went to the Hassayampa-AO145, McFall, Chief Denny, Adkins, Lane(MM1),Hudson, and many others from those times. I have a few 8MM clips too. Hope to hear from someone.

Comments: My father James L. Sams was a Marine and servied in Korea with the Canine Corp I was told. He died when I was 4 years old so I didn't get to hear much. I was going through some old papers of my mother's and found a Sacred Order of the Golden Dragon card with his name on it. It was dated November 4, 1945 onboard the USS Merrick. I would appreciate it if someone could share a story about that crossing or that day or maybe someone that knew him.

Comments: I have been on the internet for my Grandchildren trying to fix a book for them of the diffrent ships their Grandfather was on.George RETIRED FROM THE Navy.Maybe someone out there remembers him. I met a lot of people from the ship, but I canot rember the names it's been a long time.

Comments: Robert E. King served on the Merrick from 1951-1957. He was then BM2. He died last May 17 and I have begun to compile as much info regarding his navy years, from Armed Guard in 1944 to SM1 on Dennis J. Buckley DD808 1967.
He was typically close mouthed as many vets are and I'm just want to know more if I can. Looking for anyone who may have served with him. Even if no one was a close friend, I'd at least like to know the names of his fellow shipmates and a bit about them, if willing to share.

Comments: My Father, Floyce D. Freeman, served aboard the Merrick from 1961-1964. He's looking for JAMES "JIMMY" BERSETTE (spelling may be incorrect) who was an electrician aboard ship. My Dad saw him Viet-Nam when the Merrick came over in 1966-1967; on his way home from 'Nam, flight stopped in Chicago, he called James Bersette, who was working as a recruiter, and they had a drink. He was married to a lady named Yolanda, who had a daughter named Blanquita, and they had a son named James.

Comments: I was a Radioman aboard the Merrick 1962-1963. Left the ship in Viet Nam in summer '63. Last and only surface ship I was on... served on USS RATON (AGSS270), USS GREENFISH (SS351), USS BENJAMIN FRANKLIN (SSBN640), USS JAMES MADISON (SSBN627) and USS MARIANO G. VALLEJO (SSBN658). I retired from the Navy in Feb 82 after 22 years.
