Comments: My Dad was on the Merapi in the early 50's and I was just trying to get some information to read to him. He has had 2 brain tumors removed and has recently lost his eye sight. The memories he "SEES" is of Mare Island and the Merapi. Any information would be GREAT! Thanks!

Comments: My father, Lt. Alfred Baratta, now passed, served on the Merapi out of Pearl @1956. I was a youngster at Punahou School then. We lived in Naval Housing, NHA3 I believe. I still have glass slides he took on a trip to Enowetok though I cannot find the movies he took of the Equator crossing on one of the trips. Does anyone remember that time on the Merapi? Please let me know. Thank you, Mark Baratta cougarbluffs@yahoo.com

Comments: My Father served aboard the Merapi in the late 40's. He was discharged right before the first Korean conflict cruise. I believe he was an engineman. He has many good memories of his service and port calls in China, Japan. He was discharged in San Fransisco after an illness and settled near there for nearly 50 years. He lives today in Austin, Texas.

Ship had 5 Battle Stars in Korea, 88 man crew. Sailed from Bremerton, WA
to Sasaebo, Jpn. On 13 Spt 1950 the ship sailed for Sasebo, Japan,
arriving Oct 8, 1950.
As support vessel, participated in the Wonson Invasion in November, saw
action off the Pusan perimeter, involved in the evacuation of Hungnam
and participated in the Inchon Invasion.
Besides the 5 Battle Stars, ship awarded 2 Presidential Unit Citations.
Have the deck logs for three years running for the ship, from 6/1/50 to
6/10/53.
Looking for buddies and interested in hearing from crew members from
that era.

We were at Perry or under way from there at that time .Probably about
40 or 50 miles from "0" . I would like to hear from any one from the
ship that was there at that time . I' only heard from 3 people that were
ship mates but none that were aboard at that time .Please let me know
how to find some of the others if you can.
Thank you much.
