Comments: I WAS A GUNNERS MATE ABOARD THE MCDERMUT DD677 FROM SEPT 59 UNTIL AUG 63 AND WAS DISCHARGED AND GOT OFF JUST WEEKS BEFORE THE COLLISION WITH THE GREGORY. I WAS DISCHARGED WITH A GOOD FRIEND RICHARD NAGEL. WE WORKED TOGETHER FOR A WHILE THEN WE WENT HOME. I RETIRED AS A CHEMICAL PLANT WORKER IN 97 AND LIVE IN WESTLAKE LA RICHARD NAGEL RETIRED AS A HIGHLINE ELECTRIAN IN 2000 AND LIVES IN ONAWA IOWA I WORKED FOR A FIRST CLASS NAMED BILL BURT.

Comments: I see a lot written about my ship, but I just wanted to be sure we were all addressing the correct spelling of such a fine ship that I served on in 1963 and regretfully we had a collision with another great ship called the USS Gregory. The spelling of the ship is USS McDermut unless I have lost my mind and maybe I have. Correct me please if anyone has it right for sure cause I thought I did.

Keywords: My father-in-law is looking for old crew member of the USS McDermut. He has lung cancer and I told him I would assist him in this search. He was a cook on the ship and his name is Donald J. Goforth. He usually goes by Don. Ring a bell with anyone? He hung out with a guy named "Smitty".

Comments: I served on the McDermott between the Korean War and the Viet Nam Conflict. We were involved in the Cuban Crisis. The USS McDermott helped escort the Marines to Panama where they prepared to attack Cuba if necessary. We went on liberty after they entered the canal.
