Comments: My dad graduated Great Lakes in 1948 then to New Jersey for more school..back to California and then finally in 1951, on the re-commisioned USS Mathews.. He was the supply store keeper from 1951- 1953. These were, without a doubt, the best years of his life. My dad turned 80, last November, and he's beginning to lose some of his memory from the beginning of Alzheimers disease..However, he loves to talk about the Navy, so if anyone would like to contact him, please don't hesitate.. Thanks to all for their service to our country as well..Don't think that's heard often enough!

Comments: SERVED ON ABOARD USS MATHEWS FROM 1961 TILL 1964 1ST AS E3 STRIKER FROM A SCHOOL, LEFT AS LEADING ET THE DAYS I SPENT ON BOARD WERE THE BEST YEARS OF MAY LIFE. EVERY PORT WE HIT WAS LIKE A NEW ADVENTER.WISH I COULD RELIVE THEM A OVER AGAIN. IN 1980 I REINLISTED INTO THE NAVY RESERVES AND IN 1996 ON DEC THE 7TH AT ABOUT 1:00 I RETIRED WITH 22 YRS AND 6 MONTHS. AT 68 I AM STILL WORKING FULL TIME AND IN GOOD HEALTH. Comments: I served from 1955-58 in the engine room.I also have the names of all 3 duty sections in my old green "steamers book." I have a lot of b/w pictures but I cannot identify many. Can you help out?
I am looking for anyone that remembers me being put in a leg cast while we were in the Phillipines. Also anyone remembering me hurting my back during the cruise to the Pribiloff Islands in 1956. Ryan MM2

Comments: I served aboard the Mathews as an IC Electrician from June 1953 through October 1956. We were involved in transferring N. Korean prisoners of war and resupplying the Priblof Islands among many of duties.
This was quite an experience for a Kansas farm boy and I thoroughly enjoyed.
I would like to hear from any shipmate who served with me.

Comments: Being aboard the Mathews was a great experience for a Hillbilly kid from the Missouri Ozarks. I was often teased about joining the Navy to get a pair of shoes and to see people. WestPac cruise was a real eye-opener. I made some great friends while in the Navy and saw places and things I would never have otherwise experienced.
I've been married for 37 years and have three sons, three terrific daughters-in-law and three wonderful grandchildren. I have been blessed beyond measure. Wayne

Comments: My pops served on AKA 96 as a Signalman during WWII ('44-'45). I belive he said that the ship let him off in San Pedro, CA after the surrender sometime. The Maritime musuem in San Pedro still has the plaque of AKA 96. Think it's right inside the door on the left.....

Comments: I did most of my navy time abaord the Mathews..3rd div then into Radar school and back to the Mathews . Started the on board Radio Sation KAMA . Left in 1965 and went into TV and Radio..I am now in Radio LA area with a new name "Chuck Wilder " We saw the last "H" bomb set of Christmas Island..Cuban Crisis etc.

Made the far east cruise to far east and Korea and operation big switch transporting POWs from Koje Do to Inchon in 53. Drydock in Portland Ore. and Pribalof isle trip in 55. Back to Far east in 56 and reinactment of Iwo Jima landing and back to Long Beach in Oct for discharge

Comments: I was working in Ship's office in 1968 when the USS Mathews AKA-96 was decommissioned at the Naval Shipyards in San Deigo, CA. Anyone who served aboard during this era of the ships history get in touch.
Keywords: Served on board as Seaman,in First Division and as 1st Division Yeoman, then as Petty Officer 3rd Class, Personnelman 1965-1968. Made three curises to Vietnam.
