USS MATACO (ATF 86) KOREAN WAR |
| PATRICK MAHONEY wrote on May 10, 2012 City and State: ALLEN TX Unit: USS KAMEHAMEHA SSN-642 Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN Comments: May Dad (James Mahoney) served aboard the USS Mataco during the Korean War. I don't have the exact years, but would love to hear from any of his shipmates. I was a submarine officer from 1993-1999 and found out that my Dad was on the Mataco after he died in 2002. I saw the pictures and medals that he received. He was a repairman and metalsmith and one of the best welders I've ever seen. I hope hope to hear from someone who served with him. -Pat Keywords: Navy, Korea, Korean War, Mataco, Mahoney |

USS MATACO LATE 1960'S |
| IVY BRIERS wrote on April 14, 2012 City and State: SAN DIEGO CA Unit: DECK HAND Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN Comments: I SERVED ABOARD THE USS MATACO DURING THE LATE 60'S AT THE TIME I AS A SEAMAN BOATSWAIN'S MATE, JUST A DECK HAND. I BOARDED THE MATACO IN ADAK ALASKA, AND WENT BACK TO THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA SHORTLY AFTERWARDS WHERE WE TOWED TARGETS OFF THE COAST FOR A FEW MONTH. HAZARDOUS DUTY SINCE THE DAMN SHIPS COULDN'T HIT THE BROAD SIDE OF A BARN, AND CONSTANTLY SHOT CLOSER TO OUR SHIP THAN THE TARGET WE WER E TOWING, SO WE WERE CONSTANTLY CUTTING THE TARGETS LOOSE AND QUICKLY LEFT THE AREA. fOOD WAS GREAT, BUT THE WORK WAS HARD FOR A DECK HAND. I ENDED UP WITH 10 YEARS IN THE NAVY, SERVED ON 5 SHIPS, INCLUDING AND ICE BREAKER (USS BURTON ISLAND AGB-1), 3 TOURS IN VIET NAM (USS PRINCET0N LPH-5). Keywords: US NAVY FLEET TUG MATACO ATF-86 |

STREIT - USS MATACO '67-68 |
| ROY L. STREIT wrote on February 18, 2010 City and State: PALCITAS NM Unit: Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN Comments: I was on the Mataco from late '67 and got out on Dec 13, '68 on that wonderful early out. I went aboard as a e-2 (fireman) but damn well didn't want to be in that engine room! Volunteered for mess cooking (my parents owned a restaurant). Was able to make CS striker and left a CS3. Spent the entire West-Pac in the galley. Wonder if the XO Timothy O. Fanning, JR ever quit licking boots. Wonder if the Engineering Office, "Mac" ever got his well earned siroccos of the liver. Have my old Cruise book somewhere. I'd love to hear from anyone who served during that time frame. Keywords: USS Mataco ATF 86 |

SERVED ABOARD ~ 1957 - LATE 1958 |
| RON ERICKSON wrote on July 19, 2009 City and State: BOUNTIFUL UT Unit: OPERATIONS Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN Comments: I served aboard during late '57 through late '58 - Left for xfr to Aeolus (ARC3) right after return from tour in Phillipines, Taiwan area etc. The Skipper was the finest officer I ever served under - William (Bill) McGonagle. For those that missed it, Bill was later the skipper of the USS Liberty - the 'intelligence gathering' ship that was attacked during (about) '67, by the Israelis. A significant number of the crew were killed, and many others wounded. Captain McGonagle, though seriously wounded and unable to stand (literally issued orders from the deck), refused to leave the ship for medical care for about 17 hours, until all other crew members were cared for. He subsequently received the Congessional Medal of Honor for his courage and dedication. The Israelis were, reportedly, never really called to task, nor ever admitted to the attack being intentional, or even a tragic mistake. I did find a good friend of mine from my tour on the Mataco about a year ago - Neil Shinsky was a Signalman 2nd while I was on board - he now resides in the San Diego area. I'm hoping to visit with him sometime in the near future. Keywords: USS Waxwing (AM389); USS Ajax (AR6); USS Aeolus (ARC3) nickname = 'Eric' |

| JOHN BREZINA wrote on March 2, 2009 City and State: FAIRFIELD CA Unit: Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN Comments: I was aboard the USS Mataco from June 1965 to Sept. 1966. During that time we made one cruise to Adak Station Alaska with Capt. AR Evans and crew. In the past year I have been in contact with Patricia Redditt of Carlsbad, Ca who is the daughter of Capt AR Evans and have been informed that her daughter Lt. Amy Tomlinson is now a member of the Blue Angels as Blue Angel No. 8. They are very proud of her as they should be. Recently I was In Yuma, AZ for a couple of months and we traveled to El Centro NAS (65 miles away) to watch the Blue Angels practice for the upcoming season, sure is a great show. Patricia and husband retired Navy Captain Richard Redditt will attend many of the Blue Angels shows this summer. If anyone is interested in this info. you can go to the Blue Angels web site and have a look at all of the Blues. Keywords: Contacts Ron Haynes and Ed Howard. |
