Comments: I serve with a great group of men at the Riverside National Cemetery, two duty days a month. We are veteran's and retiree's doing military honor's for our fallen brother's and sister's. A few of us served in Korea at the same time. It was a big surprise when we gave the bow numbers of our ships. One member was a POW. If anyone reads this, and would like to join our unit, in the immediate area, E-Mail me.

Comments: I am the daughter of Lester D. Haynie who served on the USS Manchester from about 1952 (?) to 1954. According to the directory, my father was in the 2nd division. Fortunately, he is doing fine, but I was wondering if anyone had any pictures of my father? I have naval pictures of him, but new ones would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Comments: I served on the Manchester from Inchon to Wonson and Kalma Gac....was discharged after the Truman year was imposed on me. I still look through the cruise book trying to find anyone who was in the R division. I still remember those fur-lined face masks(for protection from the frigid temperatures) After your first breath it stuck to your face. Some protection ! I remember a YR that came along side, the 3/8 inch guy wires up to the halyard would measure 3 inches of encrusted ice build-up

New Jersey-Wonsan

Column_1_Spacer Column_2_Spacer
Jim Griffin wrote on 2001-09-03 16:44:59.0

Comments: I was reveiwing the list of different ships and noticed the New Jersey. On May 20th 1951, we were entering Wonsan harbor for a two-day mission with the New Jersey following, if I remember correctly. The desperate communist forces were trying to renew their failing spring offensive. It took us only a few minutes to realize that Wonsan sieged ships had been in trouble. The destroyer Bass was receiving fire from Kalma Gak the moment we appeared. As the ship came alonside we could see she had been hit and the Manchester brought the most serious of her ten casualties aboard. Soon after our arrival, the battleship New Jersey, a newcomer to the Korean theater, steamed into the harbor to join us on the firing line. At 0930 the next morning, Kalma Gak guns opened fire on us again, this time scoring air bursts on the New Jersey that resulted in more death and casualties. So when the Manchester returned alone on May 23rd to spend her last five days at Wonsan, we were wondering if our luck would hold. Lookouts kept their eyes glued to Kalma Gak peninsula, as our guns trained out to accomplish the Manchester's assignment, making certain that no movement of enemy troops or supplies through the Wonsan perimeter would be possible. Captain Parks was deignated Commander Task Group 95.2, controlling warships along the entire Korean East coast... After dark the second day, two Navy LSMR's moved in with spectacular amount of fire, pulverized huge areas on the beach. At 0235 we realized that the Reds had conceived a new fanatical plan to eliminate the hated UN ships in the harbor. In the light of our illumination shells and blazing searchlights, a small flotilla of boats could be seen silently closing in on our anchorage. Five-inch airbursts and 40mm shells from the Manchester and destroyers Duncan and Bass tore into the boats until there was no movement in the black water. Later the Manchester's motor boats went out with orders to retrieve the demolished sampans. They managed to find four of them, which we hoisted aboard for inspection. Whatever the Red plot had been, it failed in disaster. We will never know, however, exactly what the mission of these people was. Some theories, based on examinations of the boats retrieved, and the heavy athwartship timbers recently installed in them, indicated a large-scale mine laying scheme. Others, viewing the quantity of rifles, machine guns, ammunition and grenades found in the boats, suggested a suicidal raid on our hated ships. The last five days in Wonsan had been fortunate for the Manchester. Further enemy efforts to mine the harbor were foiled, as were invasion attemps on ROK Marine held Hwang'to Do, where Captain (now Major) Hansen had directed landings in March. We never heard again from Kalma Gak, possibly because the Manchester and destroyer Duncan had made direct hits inside several of the peninsula's gun caves... By May 31st, we had steamed south, and after assuming command of Task Element 95.28, commenced bombardment at the front lines...At 1831 that afternoon, the Manchester fired her last round into Communist Korea, and soon after was underway to rendzvous with the heavy cruiser Los Angeles...our long awaited relief. After ten months, we are going home...
