He was on the ship during the Okinawa invasion on Easter Week. Just curious about the problems you sailors encountered. He past away on Aug. 30, 1990. I am his widow. I started out in Deck Department as a Non-Designated Seaman -- 8 months later I transferred to the Navigation Department -- Rate SN/SM3. Personnel that I seem to remember are SMSN LARSON, SM1 MOON, SM2 SIMMS, QM2 HALL and SN LANE I would love to hear from old shipmates that were stationed on board the ole lady during my timeframe. This was a highly skilled group. As Boat Group Commander I was privileged to lead this boat group to a level that was graded "outstanding" by the Commander Amphibious Forces, USS Pacific Fleet. We were not called upon for action during the Korean Conflict, but were ready. Keywords: I was Boat Group Commander aboard USS Magoffin during period 1950-1952. Left for Korea July 10 1952. Trained marines while at Inchon. Took part in mock landing at Wonson. Back to San Diego in Dec. Back to far east in Aug 53. Took marines to Japan, picked up army troops in Pusan and brought them back to San Francisco. Magoffin was a good ship. We have reunions about every 18 months. Keywords: |
