Comments: My stepdad, Mason Britton, Jr., served on the USS Harris from 1950-1953. He was a LTJG and would have been in engineering aboard the vessel. I am just curious if any of his old shipmates out there might remember him. He is now 82 years old, living in Maine and very active in the local library. We would love to hear from any of you and God bless you all for your service to this country.

Comments: Hello from Illinois. Was surprised when I found this web page. Brings back a lot of memories, Woody, wasn't he from around the Geogia swamps? Sam Marsalisi, I remember about the time they announced sea stations you would be getting pale. Bill Crisp, same compartment didn't you have your trumpet and we would go ashore and you would play with some of the bands in the night clubs? , Al Friedman, got married while on leave. The time we were caught in typhoon Helen while in the Sea of Japan. Running aground of the sand bar while in IndoChina going up the river to evacuate that Army. Would like to hear more from you. Your idea of a reunion sounds good Sam.

Comments: I served on the 822 from 1953 until she was decommissioned in I think sometime in "55. Some of the most unforgettable characters I've met were on that little bucket. At this writing I don't remember all their names, but I can see their faces clearly. I remember Ken Mollenauer, Phil Crowe, Benoit, I don't recall his first name,Merrick, and too many to mention. I remember Fats and I also remember the time Ken wrote about him coming back to the ship so drunk he had to be hoisted aboard. He was a big man. His name was Gorman wasn't it? Our CO when I came aboard was B. B. Witham and I recall the time he issued a rather flowerey epistle to the crew and I was doing a bit of a parody of it in the radio shack and he was standing right behind me:not a great career move, but his only comment was, "You never know what you're going to hear on this bucket. I don't recall the name of our last CO or the exec. but I remember Mr Bob East, went on liberty with him a couple of times. He once told me officers were no fun to party with. I blame my poor memory on the stroke I suffered a few years ago. I don't remember what I blamed it on before that. If any of you guys remember me I'd love to hear from you. All the best, Bill Crisp

Comments: My father was in communications on LST 822 around 50-52. His name was Henry Owen. He passed away in 1990. Today I came across a group of letters he wrote to my mother while serving on 822. They really made the past come alive. He seemed to like the crew very much. He mentioned Dan Payne,Charles Fox,Dave Berg, Don Simonds,Tom Perrymon and Stan Kocon. He told the story of when he and Stan Kocon got drunk at the Royal Hawaian, rounded up some frogs and dumped them through the porthole of the officers mess.If any of you remember my father I would love to hear from you.

Comments: I would like to surprise my father, John Louis McNett at Christmas with some information and contacts from his days in the navy. He served on the LST 822 sometime during June 1944 and June 1946. Most of the time on the ship he was a cook.

Comments: I came aboard fresh out of boot-camp in early 52. I was going over some old pictures I had taken. I have old pictures of Boggs-Brubaker-Humphries-Allison and several more. I especially remember Fat's[I believe his last name was Gorman] Big man. He got me out the shower for my B-Day spanking. I just made BM3 when I had an accident and left the ship in early 54.

Comments: I remember that even on that little ship we still had our own little worlds. When I came aboard as an ET in Yokosuka the radio and radar shack were my center of activities. Later, I liked the conversations in the shipfitters shop. I wish I could remember the shipfitter's names now. So many stories. Like the time "Fats" was brought back in the LCVP passed out on liberty and had to be lifted aboard on a pallet with the deck crane and lowered into the tank deck because he was too big to carry up the ladder. The storm at sea where the spare stern anchor broke loose and started sliding back and forth, crashing into the rail and then the superstructure while ripping off the deck hatch over my sleeping compartment letting the water pour in. Bill Crisp was roused from sleep by the crashing sounds and ran from end to end of the compartment with the anchor noise onthe deck above chasing him. Oh well, lot's more stories too. Anyone else have some? Ken Mollenauer
