Comments: I was assighen to the 409 in sept. 55 and did a tour to korea by way of Hawaii, Midway, Sasebo Japan. We went to Inchon and Seoul (by bus of course from Inchon) then back to Northern Japan to Hakidoti (?)in winter, had ice removal details. Then to China to cover the remaining Nationalists removal from the coastal islands to FORMOSA. A jet was shot down over us during that time due to getting over the chinese mainland. China service medal for that. Don't understand why that's not in the total citations of the 409, I have a DD214 showing it. then to Buckner bay for liberty, back to Japan, Subic bay, Hawaii and HOME. Enroute to Hawaii, we were given a choice of losing a nites liberty or anchoring off the BIG island of Hawaii and watching Mauna Loua (?) erupt. We went for the Volcano. You can get drunk anytime, right LOL. KUTCH

Comments: I served about 20 months aboard the 409. Battle stations were as loader for 20mm and the rocket launcher. I spent my 19th birthday underway. It took us more than 30 days to go from San Diego to Japan, with stops at Midway Island and Hawaii. Remember the gooney birds on Midway? Got a tattoo in Hawaii on the way over and one on the way back. They have made for humorous conversation the past 50 years. Some of you guys might be interested in knowing that I have been married for 48 1/2 years, have four daughters and eleven grandchildren. I went to college and seminary to study for the pastoral ministry (would you believe, old Giff a minister?) I served as a pastor for 19 years. For the past 17 years I have been a vice principal and guidance counselor at a large Christian high school in Riverside, California. Hope to hear from you, drop me an email.

Comments: I am looking for anyone who knew my Dad. He passed away may 29 1989 and I would like to see his name on the rosters for the ships he served on. I would also like any info on how to obtain the metals he was supposed to receive and didn't. My mother and I would like to see the family have them. If you can help please contact me at the above E-mail. also if you just knew him please I would love to hear from you. I would also like to find out what his rank was. Comments: My Dad, Dave Dalton, served in the Navy from ~1950 through 1957. The LSMR 409 was one of the ships he served on as QM-2. I don't know the details of Dad's service, but he did receive a Purple Heart medal for a shrapnel wound.

I happened onto this site out of curiosity - I can't recall what "LSMR" stands for.

I'm an Air Force veteran, but fortunately, not a wartime veteran.

Thank you and all the best,

John Dalton

CHARLES (SPEEDY) Morris wrote on 2000-02-12 22:38:47.0

Comments: Would appreciate information on other members of US Navy who served on LSMR-409 in Korea. I made three trips to Korea and surrounding area from San Diego. Two of those trip were on the LSMR-409 and one trip on the USS Whetstone/LSD.

Even though I served on the Whetstone, my true love is the 409, because of the time served and the experiences I was involved in on that ship. In fact, the size of the 409 could have been accommodated within the USS Whetstone. From one veteran, I learned that near the end of WWII, they ate with white tablecloths and plates. During my tenure on the LSMR-409, we ate the Œok to good¹ food using metal trays at a table welded to the deck along with the bench. From another veteran who served on the LSMR-409 during the Vietnam era, we learned that our wives worked together at one time, although they had not discussed our military service. He sent a good picture of the 409 during the Vietnam War. I ordered the book suggested by one. I have also learned of the Alligator Alley and the reunion of LSM/LSMR¹s in Omaha in September and my wife and I plan to attend. My group made two trips to Korean waters across the Pacific and back beginning with the spring of 1952. In June 1953 we were involved in a battle with North Korea fire power while attempting to protect the islands of Choto and Sok To. I had just been relieved at gun mount #42 and had headed to chow hall. When the firing began, I grabed a peach, threw it in my mouth, and ran to my gun mount. Six people were wounded during this attack. There were other times of battle, but this is the only time the 409 was actually hit during my tenure. My third trip across the Pacific was made on the Whetstone.

From an article in the San Diego Newspaper when we returned to home port; ³Purple Heart medals were awarded to six men of the Pacific Amphibious Force recently. The men were injured when their ship, the LSMR-409, was taken under fire while serving off the island of Sok To, North Korea. The 409 was bracketed repeatedly by shells from three enemy shore batteries and sustained two direct hits during the 22 minute encounter. A direct hit in the radio room wounded L. E. snot, ET 2. and J. H. Farrell, RMSN. A second hit in the messing compartment wounded A. E. Westrope, Jr., FN, W. N. Smith CS1 and G. E. Smith HMC.²

The Navy provided me the opportunity to travel to places that I would not have seen otherwise. Some places might have been for the better if I had not visited them. Again thank you for your help. You have had many hours of joy to my life. Each day has been interesting as your e-mails, US mail, or telephone calls have arrived. Please keep me in mind, if you gather any news about the 409 or other interesting Navy or Korean War issues.

Respectfully,

Speedy Morris
