Information on Lieut. Leonard M DeRose & 1953 explosion

Comments: Lieut. Leonard M. DeRose was an officer aboard the USS Leyte during the 1953 Boston explosion. He was instrumental in saving the lives of eleven shipmates despite he himself being burned beyond recognition. He died shortly after their rescue. As a friend of his sister and her family, I am attempting to gather additional information regarding the incident. So far the only significant facts are from a Time Magazine article that can be read at "DISASTERS: Tragedy for a Leading Lady - TIME" at http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,818969,00.html

I believe that there might also have been an article in one of the Boston papers. Any additional information that can be provided would be greatly appreciated. I was deeply and profoundly touched when I first learned of this story. I'm not certain that Lieut. DeRose was ever awarded a medal posthumously. If not, he should be, even after 63 years.

Comments: Hello my name is Cameron R. Evans. I am the youngest son of a black sailor that served on the Uss Leyte and he was serving as a mess hand when the explosion occured in the Boston Harbor. My father name is Welborn Oslin Evans. He also went by the nickname "Silky". He was from Atlanta, Ga. He stood maybe 5 feet 10 inches. 165 pounds. He was medically retired from the navy in the early sixties. He passed in Feb 1998. I just wanted to see if anyone knew of him. He was a kind soul and I missed him terribly. If any info please call or email. Thank you and god bless.

Joe Albert Patterson killed October 1953 on Leyte Boston Exlplosion

Comments: Joe Albert Patterson joined the US Navy in 1953. Upon finishing boot camp he came home for at couple of weeks and was then deployed to Boston Harbor for service on the USS Leyte. He had only been aboard for a couple of weeks when there was an explosion below decks of the Leyte, and Joe was killed. He was 18 years old. We grew up together and fought the Japs & Hitler from the vacant lots around our neighborhood in East Texas. Joe had an older brother that was killed during WWII and who was buried at sea. He was a fine example of an American Youth ready to die for their country.

Comments: Does the name Walter Begovich sound familiar to anyone? He was my wife's father, and passed away when she was only 3, in 1969. She never got to know him, and really would like to learn something about her dad. From what research her sister has done, we believe he served aboard the USS Leyte in the early 1950's. It would be greatly appreciated if anyone has any memories of him, or a photo that could be emailed to us. Her mother never really asked for much information about his service to the country, so very little is known. It would mean the world to my wife. Thank You, and Thank You all for your service to our country.

Comments: My second cousin, Carroll Mohring, a pilot aboard the USS Leyte, in 1950, lost his life when the plane he was piloting, went off the side of the ship upon trying to land after a flight. I was young at the time and both his parents and his wife Jeanne (Kilgore) Mohring, are all deceased. They had no children, and I'm trying to do the genealogy on that side of the family, without much luck. Does anyone have this information?? They were from Massachusetts and Virginia Thank you.
