Comments: My uncle was ships company on the USS Lenawee during the Korean War, Seaman James C. Sigmund and was landing craft coxswain. Don't know his crafts number, but can find out. He does not have an email, if you would like to get in touch with him, I can arrange. Thanks.

Comments: My dad, Pat Clyde, was a Storekeeper 3rd class on the Lenawee between June of 52 and July of 53 when he was honorably discharged. He tells this story:
"I could not remember what dates I was on the ship. I only remember the ship was in dry dock and my first night aboard was miserable because the mosquitoes were so bad, I had to use my mattress cover to wrap up in to try to keep them off me. The next morning the cover was spotted with red dots of my blood making it look like it was designed that way. I don't remember much else besides sleeping in the troop sleeping compartment all by myself, being drained by small vampires. I do not remember ever going to sea on her, just trying to teach aircraft identification on a deck covered with welding and many, many repair crews making more noise than my big mouth could overcome. I finally gave it up for a lost cause."
I am trying to fill in some blanks in the official history (DANFS). If anyone would like to send stories, pictures, etc I would be honored to place them on the ship histories pages that I have on my web site.
Thank you all for your service!
Sincerely,
Shannon Clyde Former RM2/ss 1978-1982, USS LOS ANGELES, SSN-688

My second day onboard we got under way to Pearl to go into dry-dock.I was scrubing out a copper kettle and when the ship hit the breakwater leaving the bay,I got sick and stayed sick all the way to Pearl. After that I was never sick again.I made a lot of friends that I would like to get in touch with so if you should remember me please write or email me. This site is where I found Mularkeys Address And now we are in touch with each other. Hope to hear from some of you, J.Boyd end3

Comments: After class A enginemen school in San Diego I was assigned to the USS Lenawee and spent the better part of four years with her. The highlights were riding a typhoon out in the South China Sea, the Tachen Island evacation, two tours in Koera and a six month yard overhaul at Hawaii. My vincent motorcycle was loaded aboard and I spent many hours riding it around the island. The Worst part was the time spent hanging over the side of peter boat #23 dumping my last meal to the fish. Five foot swells and diesel exhaust did me in every time. The G I Bill helped with college and I spent 32 years as a Detroit Diesel Engineer. I fell in love wtih the old Gray Marine the first time I saw her.

I recall that we were chronically under manned and spent months at 4 on 4 off. We also put in many hours with new ensigns on Radar watches practicing plotting, maneuvering, etc.

Comments: I am a woodcarver and made carving of men dressed in uniforms from the revolutiionary war on up through world war II...I am really looking for patterns of uniforms for figures about ten inches tall...I've hit a snag in finding good pictures of navy uniforms of the 40's or 50's. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, M. Rabb

Comments: I am looking for a picture of the USS Lenawee, also looking for info on a "Torky" Torkalson from Milwaukee WI. He served on the Lenawee with my friend Robert "swede" Carlson in 1956. He also told me about a collision at sea that year too, any info would be really appreciated.

My father served in the US Navy during the Korean War. I've copied him on
this e-mail.
My Dad has given me his Navy memorabilia including letters home,
photographs, essays, etc. I am considering putting a Web site together
to let folks know what it was like to be in the Navy during the late
forties and early fifties.
Dad was a Storekeeper on the USS ESTES ACG-12 when it was the Flagship
for Rear Admiral Tom B. Hill Commander Amphibious Group One, Commander
Task Force 90.
He participated in the Koje-Do Prison Riot supression in February 1952.
He has a great story about this action that includes having to climb
down the landing nets into the waiting boats during rough seas.
On 10 June of 1952 he transfered from ESTES to USS LENAWEE, APA-195.
Later in'52 he served on LST 836.
In the Fall of 1952 he participated in Operation IVY the Atomic Tests at
Eniwetok Proving Grounds, Marshall Islands conducted by the Army, Navy,
Air Force, and Atomic Energy Commission.
Any way, thanks again for keeping the memories alive. I have included a
picture of my father and some of his buddies on liberty in Japan in 51.
best regards,
Shannon Clyde
