Comments: My Father, John T. Matthews, was aboard the USS Kearsarge from 1952-1955. He sadly passed away on February 28th of this year. He was a quiet man and never talked much about his time there. Since his passing, I have gotten a copy of DD214 and only found out now the name of his ship. If you knew him or knew anyone that knew him, please let me know. I think he may have been a radio operator but cannot be sure. His rank was RD2 if that helps. Would love to know more about the tour or anything you would like to share. Would also love pictures as I am compiling information about his life so that his grandchildren and great grandchildren will remember him always!

Thanks, Tamra Johnson

His name was Anthony (Tony) Cozzetto, he passed away in 1991. Would love to hear some great stories, he had a great sense of humor and I'm sure was always playing practical jokes! I think he was stationed in Long Beach CA.

Comments: In December 1947, I came aboard the Kearsarge when it was in drydock at the Navy shipyard in Brooklyn,NY. I was a WWII Merchant Marine veteran and was assigned to the QM gang based upon my previous training. One of my GQ stations was on the helm as well as during flight quarters. On the night before the ship was to depart Hampton Roads for the Med. Sea, I was the QMOW on the 20-24 quarterdeck watch. Consequently, I was on duty and saw one of our ship's liberty launches swamp while trying to make the gangway and sounded the alarm to the OOD. Next morning, everyone had to muster at quarters to see who was missing. I remained aboard for one year before transferring to a Key West based destroyer that my younger brother was on. I would like to contact any Ms that was on the ship at that time.

Comments: While going through some of my deceased Uncle's (Howard Williams, who died in 1976) property, I found two items of interest, both shiny steel cigarette lighters. One was engraved "USS Kearsarge CVA-33, and the other was to who I assume a retired shipmate, James A. Marslek. Does anybody have any knowledge of this person, or wish to bid on the lighter before I send it to the auction block?
