Looking for old Navy friends |

William (Bill) Elliott wrote on 2003-03-04 21:46:22.0
Comments: I am helping my dad try to find some old friends from the Navy. We were looking at his yearbook over the holidays. I told him I would try to locate some of his old buddies. He and my mom lived in California before he shipped out. He was on board from '54-'55 I think. He was in Fox division, a gunners mate. He does not have e-mail so please e mail me and I will get it to him.

My dad is deceased (1992) and I was just going through his Navy stuff and recognized the ship and the squadron and responded to a couple of things, that's all.
I'd ask some more questions but I don't know anything about the Navy except my dad loved "Top Gun"...we watched it over and over and over. He liked American flags, too....

Comments: I was "draft motivated" to join the Navy. After finishing college in January, I started teaching school at Sulfur, LA, but within two months I had to enlist to avoid being drafted. Went to boot camp at San Diego; went to Treasure Island to go to ET school, but was pulled to go to OCS and got commissioned in March 1952. Went to Kearsarge and served in CIC and A Division. Made the 52-53 Korean cruise and upon return to San Diego in March 1953 I went to flight training. First tour as a pilot was in a Banshee squadron (VF-141 flying the F2H-3)and we deployed aboard Kearsarge for the 55-56 WestPac cruise. That was the last time I was aboard Kearsarge. Learned a lot aboard Kearsarge. My Kearsarge time as an ensign let me learn a great deal about Essex class carriers, and that served me very well when I was ship's company in Intrepid as a LT and later when I was Exec of Hancock as a commander.

Comments: Was an AT in VF-11. We came around Cape Horn in summer '52 aboard Oriskany. Spent a few weeks at NAS San Diego and then boarded the Kearsarge. We left Diego 11 Aug '52 and spent the next few months attached to CAG 101 on the Kearsarge. VA-702, VF-791, VF-884 were also part of CAG-101 along with detachments from VC-61, VC-3 & some other units that I can't recall. The Rippers 1st mission over N Korea was on 17 Sept '52 and our final was on 21 Feb '53. The Kearsarge arrived back in San Diego 17 Mar '53. VF-11 arrived at NAS Cecil Field on 18 Mar. I would enjoy hearing from shipmates. Zach

While looking for VF-114, I came across your Korean War Project. I think
they called it a conflict. The addition "Photo Lab' put me in touch
with someone I served with on the 1954-1955 cruise. I was attached
from VF-114 to the Photo Lab. I have been trying to contact other
shipmates, now that I have a computer, Internet access and found my old
cruise book.
I'll check your page periodically, so I can put in my addition.
