THIS WAS ONE OF THE SHIPS MY FATHER SERVED ON. |
| JULIE COLE-GOUTHIERE wrote on October 28, 2010 City and State: Unit: Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: I never knew much about what happened during my father's service from 1952-1955, as he was reluctant to talk about it. I don't quite know what the rules were then about talking about it when they came home. He shared a few personal experiences with me and we both wept..as it did him good to let some of the painful experiences out, and I'm glad he shared them with me. I wish I had more pictures of him on the ship, or any stories. I thought he had also mentioned he was on the USS Munson? He had a picture of that, but in the flood of 1993 we lost it somehow. I would like to see a picture of the ship with his crewmembers, or any other picture someone might have with him. His name was Fred Marvin Cole. Thank You Keywords: |

Mohar (retired) was an engineman serving aboard the Karin from May 1951 to January 1954. I found a few photo slides of men named Bridges, Cassidy and Fred Barton. Also, some beautiful sunsets and a picture of brooms! One of our daughters is named Karin because Joe liked the spelling of the name. His picture is on the Navy Memorial site. Keywords: |

| PAUL BOWEN wrote on April 26, 2002 City and State: HERMANN MO Unit: Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN - KOREA Comments: Served on the Karin form 1953 til July 1956. Home port when I came aboard was San Francisco, about 6 months later home port was moved to Pearl. It made Island runs most of the time I was aboard, Eniwetok, Kwajalene, Midway, Wake, Johnston Island etc. Early in 1956 we went to Sasebo Japan then to French Indo China, (Vietnam) we hauled food for the transports that were moving Vietnamese to the south. We spent 4 glorius days in Hong Kong on our way back to Pearl, I was discharged in July 1956. I was an engineman 2nd class, the engine was a Nordberg 6 cylinder diesel the ship had a cruising speed of 11.8 knots, it took 23 days to go from Hong Kong to pearl. The skippers name at that time was Van Horne, the engineering officer was Milpointer and was replace by Houser, the exec was Redifer III, I thought he was a prick. Some of the names I remember are Simonsen, Rasmussen, Carter, Woodall. Keywords: USS Karin AF33 |
