Comments: I joined the "pierce" in july 1952, high lined from the USS Misspilion, a fleet oiler. went thru the shelling off North Korea, the USS Barton's mine encounter and around the world trip. I too still have the hard bound "ships log" of the world cruise. Also hundreds of pictures of the ships company doing sea duty and libery in the ports. I went on to become BM2 on the west coast amphibs. My duty abourd the Pierce was my finest memories.

Comments: I am the grand daughter of Alfred Varela. Although he passed 12/7/05 my grandmother recently passed 12/16/07. In cleaning out the house I recently stumbled across all the letters he wrote my grandmother while away. What a treasure. I am organizing the letters in order and placing them in waterproof slips and then reading them in order. He was on the John R. Pierce. The dates I've seen most are 1952-1967 so far. He served two tours in Korea and 1 tour in vietnam.
I've shared my findings (not details just items) with my 7th and 8th grade students and my children. They love to hear anything I can share with them about my grandpa.
According to his letters his brother in law Tex was on the ship too. And so far he speaks about a jack as well. In a letter I read last night he spoke of another ship hitting a mine and there were six men missing. Possibly someone will know him on this site and point me in the right direction for finding pictures of him and shipmates.
I am gathering pictures and information about my grandfathers journeys to dedicate a wall in my home for him and his friends. I would like to share these things with my children as well.
If anyone knows places I can go to please get back to me or if you have questions. Thank you for your time.
Christine Varela

I am Co-Founder and Chief Recruiting Officer of the USS John R.
Pierce DD-753 Sailors Organization Inc. We have reunions every
year and in 98 it will be our 8th year.
Our flag ship was the Barton DD-722, Soley DD-707 and Strong DD-758
were also with us.
When the Barton hit the mine out at sea we were the ship that took on
the flag officers and brought them back to the States 3 months later.
I also believe that up to that date 6/52-9/52 we were the worst ship hit
by shore battery to that date. That happened on 8/6/52.
When the Barton hit the mine she was out with TF-77. Later in that
summer we were off the cost of N. Korea protecting a ROK held island.
It had 500 ROK soldiers on it a 9 US Marines. They were used to
infiltrate N.Korea. The jets, from TF-77 caught a train going down the
coast and they stopped it. We were treading water trying to keep the
guks from re-building the tracks, as it was between two mountains.
This was on August 6, 1952. Later in the day they hit us with everything
but BB-Guns. After it was all over with they called it superficial
damage. We were about 1/4 mile off the beach when they opened up. They
knocked out everything but MT 53.
They even knocked out our radio. As we turned and headed out to sea you
could hear the shells over head from the "Big Mo" who was out with the
TF firing those 16" guns.
