Comments: Hi, I'm looking for Terrance Smith or Rud Johnson. They were some of my dads friends when he was in the Navy. He asked me to look them up. Also, can anybody let me know if there is a reunion coming up soon. He served on the James Keyes (i believe) between 63-65, maybe longer. My dad is William Robinson.

Thanks,

Judy Jerrell

Looking for Shipmates of John E. McDowell

Column_1_Spacer Column_2_Spacer
John McDowell wrote on 2008-03-01 20:16:41.0

Comments: I'm looking for shipmates of my father John E. McDowell, he was initially a frogman and tagged mines in the Japan Bay and near Hong Kong. After getting hurt he was retrained into the Signal Corp where at one time was the only one on the ship excluding the Skipper who could read and send semiphore. He told me a story about how he won a few bets by getting the scores from games in the states early from other ships and placed a few bets. He stopped when he found out the new XO could read semiphore.

He also told me a story about when he had to spend 30 days straight on the signal bridge, because there were no other signalmen on the ship at the time. He told me that he fell off the signal bridge once and fell 3 decks and had to be hoisted ship to ship for sickbay on another ship.

Yet another story my dad told me was when he was posted on shore on a watch on a clif face over a beach. A mortar went off close by and he fell rolling down the hill onto the beach and in the middle of a mine field. He woke up with a captain screaming at him for wrecking his mine field.

If you know my Dad by any of these stories, let me know. I have pictures of him and the Kyes to share with you. Thanks for viewing my post.

Comments: Shooting shells and missing the supply trains as they came out of the tunnels.... Dad said that's what you guys did, and you never hit a damn one! Dad was born in 1930. Dad would have been about 22 years of age. He was a really small young man, had a navy clearance to wear Justin Boots because of his feet, and had ears that stuck out from his head. At the time he was either an undergrad at the University of Missouri-Columbia, or had just finished his degree before going to Korea on the DD-787. I have a picture of the ship's crew and DD-787 which is a big rascal [the picture is big, destroyers are small vessels!] when Dad was on board, if my Mom can now find it. After service in Korea, Dad came back to MU-Columbia and got his Masters in Ag Science, and then went to the University of Arizona for his Ph.D. in Agronomy -- dirt doctering. I lost Dad in January 2004, and I miss him much. If anyone knows my Father, I would appreciate it, deeply.

Thanks. And thanks to all the young, brave men that defended their country at this point in time... in our history.

Comments: Recently while on a visit to Taft, CA I came across an old salt of a shipfitter named Irving R. Freeman. Once he discovered I am a retired Master Chief we struck up a great conversation and I thought I would pass this information to you. He was a WWII Vet who became a plank owner of the USS Kyes. If anyone is interested in communicating with him please email me and I will pass your info onto him. I am also looking for any destroyer nostalgia or websites I may look to buy something for this old sea dog. He is a great guy to talk to and I can only think of doing something nice for him. Thanks

Comments: I cannot believe that I misspelled the James E. "Kyes" (DD-787).

I still need to find out the dimensions of the sonar acoustic dome that was installed when the ship had the QHB-Able Sonar installed in Mare Island in 1951.

I am also looking for pictures of how she looked topside when she left the yard.

Comments: I am a student at Aberdeen University in Scotland, mainly studying the history of HMS Belfast at this time. Interestingly, a Zippo lighter with an engraving of a destroyer and the legend "James E. Keyes" has just come into my possession. I was just interested to know if personnel were issued these at any time? Date mark suggests 1960-61. Sorry if this seems trivial but small effects such as these have really got me interested in military history of the 20th Century. Thank you for your time.
