MAC MACMEEKIN |
| DAN MACMEEKIN wrote on December 19, 2007 CITY AND STATE: UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: My brother, Robert J. "Mac" MacMeekin, served on the DD776 James C. Owens during the Korean War and stayed in the Navy until about 1956. He spoke of white phosporus shells that killed men in the galley off Korea shortly after he had left to go on watch and of a trip up the Yalu River to drop off commandos. (The later tale was told late in his life--he died in 1999--and he was unsure whether it remained classified.) He spoke of steaming up and down a sweltering Red Sea, I believe during the Suez crisis, when the Canal was blocked. He also spoke of liberty in Naples and visiting Pompeii. He was an avid motorcyclist, riding from our home in the Philadelphia area when the ship was in port in Norfolk. I don't know his rating, except that he wasn't an officer. He occasionally did shore police duty, once when he missed the sailing of DD776 from Japan. I would appreciate any confirmation of what I think he told me. Despite the kind invitation of Greg Flanigan, I was unable to attend the recent reunion of DD776 crew in Maryland. Cheers, and greetings to all DD776 vets. WORLD CRUISE 1952- MSSN MARTURANO JOSEPH JR. |
| JOSEPH MARTURANO III wrote on May 12, 2007 CITY AND STATE: NY UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: NAVY VETERAN Comments: My Father Joseph Marturano Jr. Served aboard The Owens During it's World Cruise. He was a cook. Dad Passed away at the age of 68 due to complications of Emphysema and Heart related illness. I have his cruise book, Photos, Shellback certificates, cards Menu for July 4th 1952 etc. Dad always spoke highly of the Owens and he often recounted the attack at Songjin. It left a strong lasting impression on him. His grandson, My Son and I are in the process of building a webpage to be comprised of that world cruise book. We are currently getting it scanned into the pc. We will build a tribute site to dad, the JC Owens cruise and it's men. From what I can tell, the Crusie book is a rarety today and we wanted to insure that the history is well documented with actual words and photos. There are many crew photos, Shellback photos and even Damage photos from the attack at Songjin. If ANYONE remembers my Dad, I would be honored to hear from you.
