Comments: Mr. T. Moore: Thank you for your history of the Bass. Do you have any information on what date the ship returned from her third Korean War tour (the tour which began on 15 July 1953)? Is there any further information on the three survey operations and two demolition assignments she was involved in during this time? Do you have information on post-armistice operations that any of the ships in this class may have been involved in? Thank you, Chad Hill. Researching service of deceased father. 615-804-8859

Specifically, agent or small unit extraction from the beach. I am researching the service of my late father. Thank you--Chad Hill

Comments: First time on the big water, Late October 1954. I didn't join the Navy and was nervous as hell. Then the captain addressed the 71 Marines he was to take from SoCal to Yokohama---leading a convoy. Saw the captain was a Mustang and immediately felt better. It was a rocky road and we went beyond the engineering point of no return a couple of times. But I'm still here and mighty grateful to that captain for hs seamanship.

I have a few addresses but never could find many of the original crew. My wife and I hosted our ship's reunion in 1993 here in Hattiesburg. I found this link on the webb site and thought I would ask if anyone knew about where I could find Email addresses of the original crew. I found a list of the original crew on this web page. Comments: The History Museum & Historical Society of Western Virginia is seeking the assistance of Navy veterans, as well as Marine Corps veterans, who served aboard the USS Horace A. Bass APD-124.
The Bass was a ship named in honor of Horace A. Bass, Jr. of Roanoke, Virginia, who served in the U.S. Navy as a aviation pilot in Fighter Squadron 3 (VF-3) during WW2. He was awarded the Navy Cross posthumously for his actions during Midway. He was reported MIA during the Battle of East Solomon Islands 24 August 1942, and then presumed dead a year later.
The APD-124 was named in his honor in 1944, and served both in WW2 and the Korean War.
The Museum seeks any information about the ship for its current exhibit, "Ships & Shipmates," about the ships named "Roanoke," and a gallery featuring local Roanoke citizens who served, or are currently serving, in the U.S. Navy. The exhibit will be on display for 3 years.
Items such as photos or other memorabilia of the ship would be appreciated, as well as written memoirs or stories of their time aboard the Bass.
If you can help, contact or e-mail the Museum, any assistance would be deeply appreciated.
Sincerely, Roy Baugher III Adm. Asst.
