Comments: My Dad, George Naumczik (FT2), served on the USS Hopewell from 1951-1954. Some of his friends that I recall from his stories were Bill Hutcherson, James McAnally, R.M. Odell and Rex Tucker. I would love to hear from anyone who knew my Dad in the Navy and would like to get in touch with him. Also, I would appreciate information on where I can get a cruise log that mentions my Dad and has a picture of him.

Comments: Fall River/Newport RI October 21-22, 2002

USS Hopewell DD-681 crew completes highly successful reunion visit to the Newport Naval Base. With the helpful assistance of POA officer Ensign Jennifer Berg, the crew was enthusiastically welcomed by Naval personnel of the War College, Naval Chaplains School and Surface Warfare Officers’ School. The 67 crew and spouses were lead in memorial worship by LCDR Carla Cherry at Battleship Cove on Monday. On Tuesday, crew was introduced to training simulators for offices learning the operations of propulsion and power generating machinery. Tuesday evening crew was given an eye opening review of the USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70) “Enduring Freedom” operations in the Indian Ocean off Afghanistan by LCDR Dennis Garth, who served as the Air Defense Officer, Tomahawk Strike Officer and Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection Officer and now is a student at the Naval War College. Developed by the Carl Vinson enlisted crew, his multi-media presentation of the combat and logistic efforts was terrific and creative. Combat surveillance images from 10,000 feet revealed Al Quada camel dung and escaping troops along mountain trails. For the first time to a public audience, the existence and operational readiness of Al Qaeda captured Soviet MiGs on the ground was revealed. These images never showed on national media outlets.

Battleship Cove provided dinner for the crew, tours of the museum ships, and a fantail memorial service for departed crewmembers. Reunion Boatswain Noel Nichols ’62-64 co-lead worship and sang “Gather at the River,” a Charles Ives’ arrangement. After a thorough inspection of all spaces, crew was tired and ready to mutiny if the reunion Boatswain did not release the Liberty Bus for a return to the Johnson and Wales Inn barracks. FTG2 Phil Otterbeck ’61-63 missed ships movements while in the bowels of the Joseph P Kennedy sparking with his charming wife of 25 years … Crewmembers also visited the New Bedford Whaling Museum, the Vanderbilt Mansion, The Breakers, and the Astor-Beachwood Mansion, with its 1898 theme and costume. Crewmembers played the role of Theodore Roosevelt, then Secretary of the Navy, Great White Fleet Officers and dependents at the Astors' Beechwood.

Housing and Reunion accommodations were provided by the Johnson and Wales University laboratory school with the courteous and talented student staff. Crew took Liberty in the famous Audrey’s restaurant, a local sports bar and the Grist Mill in local Seekonk, MA.

Robert Lawson ’51-53, Commander Russell Wilson ‘68-69 and loving wife Halma, provided reunion leadership with reflections and poetry reading. Table decorations were prepared by Lois Dumford and Jo Nichols. 50/50 drawing was handled by EM3 Cam Burrosso, ’68 and MR3 Leo Labbe ’69. Korean War Captain James Hildreth, ADRM USN (retired), provided beverage and warm wishes to all of Hopewell’s faithful and loyal crewmembers.

Comments: We are looking for our shipmate. Could you help us find him? Noel Nichols MM3 Websnipe USS Hopewell Home port http://www.geocities.com/Hopewell_DD681/ Our Korean War Guest We had on board with us this cruise, a Republic of Korea Navel Officer, Ensign Pak Nae Um. Mr. Pak came aboard on the 18th of October, 1952, upon his graduation from ROK Naval Academy. Mr. Pak underwent extensive training. Engineering, sonar, CIC and bridge watches are just a few of the various phases of ship's work participated in by our Korean Naval Officer. Of all the training he seemed to enjoy engineering most. Ensign Pak enjoyed visiting the many 'ports of call' made by the Hopewell. Although he had been to Sasebo before, he listed Sasebo, along with Yokosuka, as his favorites.

Before his entry into the Republic of Korea Naval Academy, Mr. Pak graduated from Chyong Ju Commercial High School. He completed his three years course in August of 1949. In order to qualify for the cruise on Hopewell it was necessary for the Korean Ensign to maintain high marks at the ROK Naval Academy. When we pulled into Yokusaka for the last time, the ROK Naval Officer left us, and reported to Destroyer Division 92 for additional training. When asked his reaction to the officers and men of Hopewell, Mr. Pak said "I think you behave gentle and kind. I like your cleanness and respect for good manners."

Comments: My father, Tony Barela, was aboard the USS Hopewell DD681 during the Korean War. He served in the Navy and Naval Reserves until the late 70's early 80's until their meetings moved to Phoenix. My son was looking for information for a school project, anything to do with history, and was asking his grandpa, which I'm sure any other veteran would feel proud of, just as I heard the pride in my dad's voice. He gave my son his ship's name as well as the fact that there were 1172 men aboard. I can't believe that I actually called my dad back to make sure that this was not just a ship he was stationed on and that it was during the Korean War when I could not find this particular ship listed here. If anyone has any further information or if this could be looked into as to why this ship is not listed I would appreciate it. My son did find something else to do his project on but the pride and excitement in my dad's voice that his grandchild was interested, if only for school, in something he took pride in himself, made me ask that this ship and any information be added. Thank you.
