Comments: At the end of WWII, I was assigned to the USS Hope
and picked it up in Sept 1945 at Manila,
Philippines. WWII had just ended and the times were
quite joyous. We went up to Japan and pick up about
300 wounded American soldiers and brought them back
to the US. It was an intense and marvelously
wonderful experience to sail under the Golden Gate
Bridge into a land that was free again.
I was a Yoeman 3 at the time and worked in the ship's
office. Word came through that fleet yoemen were
needed at the Bureau of Naval Personnel, so I
transferred to D.C. until the end of my enlistment.
The only name I remember on the ship is Fr. Maheide,
the Catholic chaplain.
The ship was headed for mothballs when I left, but
I'd heard it served later in other parts of the world.

Comments: I wish that I know more about my Father and his place in many conflicts in many places. All I know is that he served on the USS HOPE during the Korean and WWII. Is there anyplace I can find out more. My Father passed away on April 15 1970.And after that, well it was pretty quiet as I remember as an 11 yr. old. My Grandfather John Egberts Sr. served in the in the Army Calvary. I'm told he served bravely and as the rest of his generation had. All I can remember as a child was a photo of him posing with his mount dressed in Army uniform. My brother told me he was awarded the bronze and silver stars for bravery beyond the call of duty. Is this just folklore? Maybe someone out there can put me on the right path. Thanks a grateful daughter and granddaughter, and American Sue Mann

She met a man named Clive in Hong Kong on R and R in March of '71. She was stationed on the USS Hope. She was from Florida in a town with a "Lake" in the name. Lakeland, Lake Wales...

Thanks.
