Comments: I last saw the Hoop in San Diego in the Moth Ball Fleet. I was working on board a reseach ship and saw her at the end of the harbor. She was scrapped some time in the late 60's. I served aboard the Hoop from 1953 to 1955.

Comments: I went aboard the Hooper Isl. out of boot camp Co.766 San Diego,1951 sail w/her til decommission in '55.Many memories of a great ship as well as shipmate,Lilly in the Bakeshop if he out there are any contacts we road the train from La.to San Diego Boots buddy.I was a Seward in Supply div.after decommission I left the Navy,work for the VA.in Portland,Oregon until retmt. in 1978.Moved to Louisiana 1996.But I stiil have memories of the Hooper Isl.

Comments: Can't remember too many shipmates, transferred to USS Kermitt Roosevelt ARG16 after only about a year on board the Hooper Island. I did contact Eugene Maurin and James Wansley who also worked in the machine shop. Would like to find a guy I only remember as "Howard" who left the ship around the middle of 53. Also a guy named Johnson from Minnesota.

Thought you might like to see how the model of ARG-17, U.S.S. Hooper Island is progressing. It is not complete, nor is it ever likely to be. I Am still gathering information and gleaning details from fuzzy photo's and an ever-declining memory and will update from time to time as details are confirmed. The model is intended to depict the ship as she appeared in 1954-55.

Comments: I served on the Hoop from 1956 through March 1959 worked with. Geo.Cook, Alan Hains, Wayne Burnet, Jack Axtens, Ken Stevens, Cheavers, Gifford EM2 Zane Moot was our Chief. We cruised to Eniwetok in the Marshal Islands in 1958, On Operation Hard Tack. In 1959 Hooper Island received orders to Decommission and the Crew was to transfer to USS Klondike to be recommissioned. I do have a picture of the Hoop but it will be some months before I can get to them.

Of course no one knew what was going on, but at first we were in the Tonkin gulf, and days later we noticed the weather was getting cooler, and finaly cold...Then one day in the P.O.D. Comments: I served on the USS Hopper Island from 1951 to 1955 and one of my friends was Dennis Theriault I was wondering if anyone know where he lives I would like to get in touch with him. I was a commisary Man on the ship The ship was still in commission when I got out of the Navy in Aug 1955.
