| RICHARD HARPER wrote on July 20, 2006 City and State: FORT WORTH TX Unit: Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: My father, Winfred O. Harper, served on the Hobson during WW II. He later became a missionary to Africa. He drowned in Tanganyika in 1958. He is buried in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. I am going back to Tanzania in Dec. to celebrate the 50th anniversary of a church he started in 1956 He told stories of the Hobson. One time, a bunk below him caught fire. With torpedoes below the bunks, that was a problem. He was taken before the captain, where it was discovered that he was the only man on the ship that didn't smoke. The guy below him was guilty. He managed to steal steaks from the officers mess. He figured out how to wire them to boiler pipes and broil them. He was very popular. I would love to hear any stories. Thanks. His son... USS HOBSON DMS 26. A SURVIVORS STORY |
| RAYMOND MUNROE wrote on February 26, 2003 City and State: MONTROSE NY Unit: PHIBLANT [AMPHIBIOUS FORCE-ATLANTIC FLEET Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN - KOREA Comments: "A Survivor's Story" is not mine but that of a Quartermaster 2nd Class whose name I do not recall. He had written an article published in either ARGOSY or TRUE magazine maybe 50 years ago, but somehow the issue got lost over the years. His story struck home for two reasons; first, he was sleeping in his bunk in the same compartment as I had on my third Naval Reserve training cruise in 1950 on Ludlow DD438, also a Benson-Livermore class. I remembered quite well the "ladder" [more like a very narrow stairway complete with risers--some ladder!] leading to the head he had to swim up and through UNDER WATER! Second; I had a similar experience in November, 1952 when my ship Ruchamkin APD89 was rammed by a Texas Co. tanker of 10,000 tons 60 miles off Cape Henry, VA at about 0215h on 11/14. We had taken an Army Recon unit (41 members) aboard at Little Creek two days before to demonstrate the latest in amphibious assault. We had taken them back aboard about 4 hours before. APD's have a troop compartment on each side (in place of weather deck on a DE) and they were assigned to the port compartment. Unfortunately the tanker rammed our port side, but providencially at the after motor/engine room. How much does a 6,000HP electirc motor weigh? Try lifting a six HP motor, then multiply that by 1,000. Enough, for it to keep us from being cut in half and going down at least as quickly as the Hobson. My compartment was just aft of this but we caught the rebound. I slept just to starboard of the ladder to topsice. I awoke to complete darkness--no power and the battle lamp batteries had gotten run down. I somehow knew I could not use that. I got down nearly hip-deep into sea water, fuel oil from our ruptured tanks below, and crude oil from the tanker's bow. I saw later that the tanker bow had crushed it. I knew my way in the dark back through the cargo hold to Steering Aft and out throufh that hatch. It was just about as dark with no moon and no stars. Something, or someone!) told me to go up and over the boat deck using the starboard ladder and between the the 4 double-stacked LCVPs and then up the ladder to the signal brige. Only then did I learn what had happened. If I had used the port ladder to the boat deck I, without shoes, would have fallen onto torn and jagged steel, and then into the sea. We were towed that morning by a Navy seagoin tug into the Portsmouth Navy Yard. Most unfortunately, seven of our army "passengers" were killed, and a number of my shipmates sleeping on the starboard side were seriously injured but did recover. Well, my ship, my home for 2 years, did not sink and I survived as you may have guessed by now! We were still in the Med when the news broke about the Hobson/Wasp collision, and this was still fresh in my mind. When I read the magazine article I could certainly emphasize with this particular Hobson Survivor, in particular since I was a QMS3 at the time, standing both Quartermaster and Signalman watches. My primary reason for posting this was to hear from another Hobson survivor who may have known the author of this article, as well as from anyone who might know where I can find his story on the Internet. I would be pleased to hear any who would be interest in either of the above events or anything pertainig to these. Regards to "Nancy Hanks", Raymond G.
