Comments: My father was on the USS Vulcan AR-5 @ 1950-1952. The ship remained in Mystic CT during this time. He was Fireman (I think first class) and was going to learn to underwater weld but my older brother was born and also my Dad's two years were up. He has passed 8 years now but I still remeber some stories like how they made ash trays in the metal shop and being in the VERY VERY hot boiler rooms. If anyone knew Bill pleas send me an email, I would love to hear from you. Thank You Vetrans Greg Moulder GSMOULDER@yahoo.com

Comments: Dear : USS HECTOR AR-7 Crewmen:
I found your name on a list of USS HECTOR crew members on the USS HECTOR Ship's Roster internet website. Our firm represents the family of Mr. Richard Boucher who served with you on board the USS HECTOR from 1960 to 1961 as a Boiler tender.
I am writing this letter to ask for your help. Mr. Richard Boucher recently passed away. He was diagnosed with mesothelioma, a form of cancer that the doctors agree was caused by Mr. Richard Boucher's occupational exposure to asbestos. His family is now involved in a wrongful death asbestos lawsuit, against the manufacturers, suppliers and civilian contractors. We are not pursuing the government in this action.
Unfortunately, Mr. Richard Boucher's family does not know the names of all of the various asbestos containing materials and the equipment that were used on the USS HECTOR. You may remember asbestos-containing products, such as:
-asbestos pipe insulation, -asbestos cement/mud -asbestos canvas or cloth -asbestos block boiler insulation, -valve packing, -pump and flange gaskets, -interior boiler refractory, -floor tile, -asbestos insulated wire, electrical panels with Bakelite insulators, -laminate asbestos board for bulkhead panels and ceiling panels
Do you remember any of the brand names: -Kaiser V-Block Refractory, used in the boilers -Eagle-Picher, -Johns Manville, -Combustion Engineering, Foster Wheeler, Babcock & Wilcox, Cleaver-Brooks, Riley Stoker boilers -Flexitalic, John Crane and Garlock packing and gasket products. -Union Carbide Bakelite electrical insulation board, electrical components -Westinghouse, Micarta covered asbestos bulkhead panels -Cutler-Hammer, Square-D, Westinghouse, Alan-Bradley, and General Cable electrical components, switch gear, control panels, cable and wire. -GE and Westinghouse Turbines
Do you remember which repair yards the USS HECTOR put into during the time you served on board this ship. Finally, if you recall any of the civilian contractors that worked on the USS HECTOR when she was repaired or overhauled please contact me.
Any information you can provide regarding this ship is extremely important to Mr. Richard Boucher's family. Please contact me at my email address mbasques@braytonlaw.com; call me at (800) 765-7778 extension 342, or write me at Richard Boucher Family, c/o Brayton * Purcell, 222 Rush Landing Road, Novato, CA 94945. I thank you in advance for your help.
Sincerely,
Mike Basques Investigator

We were docked a Pier 9 Long Beach, Cal. Sorry to hear she was decommissioned and finally destroyed. I would like to know more about reunions. Also would like to hear from any shipmates.

Comments: Any one who served abord the USS Leo AKA 60. Please contact me. I have found that there is a ships patch. I found a picture of it on the internet and I know nothing about it. My Dad was an original crew member and I'd love to see if I can either find one or get a better look at one to have it duplicated. Any help or yarns about the Leo are greatly appreciated.

Congratulations on your Korean War site. It is my first visit. I have
been e-mailing with a fellow Navy vet and we are trying to find info
about the USS Hector AR-7, I thought maybe I had found something in
your site under the US Navy vessel listings, I was disappointed not to
find a listing for the USS Hector.
I served two tours on her in Korea from 1951-1954. We were awarded
the Korean, UN medals with two stars.
Just a little Navy pride showing. Thanks and again your site is great.
Brings back a lot of memories some sad but mostly good.
