Comments: I am looking for those who knew my grandfather, Richard "Dick" Ganley. He served on the USS Haven AH-12 Hospital Ship in the early 50s for the Korean War and then afterwards when it was a floating hospital stationed in Long Beach, CA. He also served in WWII but I am not sure where he was stationed. He died when my father was very young and I wanted to connect with people who knew him as I never got the chance to meet him. If you knew him at all and/or have any stories/photos to share (good/bad/neutral-ANYTHING!) please contact me. I know very little about his life, as the only family members who really knew him have died, and I want to change that. Please help if you can. Thank you!

Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN - KOREA

Comments: I served on the Haven in 1953 or 54. It's been so long ago, I can't remember. I do remember my duty as chief mess cook, the best duty I ever had in my six years. I had just finished Lab school in
Philadelphia, and was really looking forward to working in the lab on board. When I came on board, there were no patients, so I wound up as a mess cook. The cheifs were great. I had the best meals on the ship and even made extra cash, which at the time was must needed and appreciated. As a matter of fact, my wife and I took laundry home from the crew to make ends meet.
We never went to sea, except to go out far enough to get our cigarettes without taxes. Too bad we couldn't get beer, etc the same way.
From the Haven I went to the Ajax and while I was in Japan, my oldest daughter was born, now 47 years old. It seems like yesterday.
I made a career out of the things I learned in the Navy. I did my college after I got discharged
and started a career in laboratory sales. I retired in 1995.
I hope someone remembers me and responds.
