LECAROZ wrote on July 29, 2009 City and State: CONCORD NH Unit: OI DIVISION Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN Comments: I was stationed on the Harveson DER 316 from Nov 1955 until we transferred her to the mothball fleet in Sacromento, Ca on 30 June 1960. She did a lot of squeaking and groaning, but she a good ship I was assigned to the OI Division and worked in CIC as did many others in that crew. Radar picket was a very boring and monotonous running atound in circles for 24 0r 25 days. We all looked forward to the departure from the assigned watch station, and bringing the engines on line to make a dash to our home port.. .MEMORIES>> Keywords:

Hempstead, Douglas SUNRISE, Fla. Douglas Hempstead, 81, of Sunrise, formerly of Westerlo, died October 29, 2003. Born in Ravena and raised in Westerlo, N.Y., Doug was a 1939 graduate of Berne-Knox-Westerlo High School. He attended Hope College in Mich. before serving in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He served in both the European and Pacific theaters on the destroyer escort USS Harveson. After retiring from Hannay Hose Reels in 1974, Doug and his family moved to Fla. where he resided in Lake Worth, Lake Placid and Sunrise. He is survived by his wife Martha; children, Thomas D.
