| WILLARD (BILL) GUY wrote on June 24, 2008 City and State: LAWRENCE KS Unit: USS HANNA DE449 Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN Comments: Upon discharge, I finished my college training in Geology at the University of Colorado. Have worked as a Petroleum Geologist for over fifty years. Presently, I do Research at the University of Kansas. Be sure to read the book on our South Pacific Island cruise in 1953-54 written by J. C. Meredith, the Captain of the USS Hanna. It is a great history of our trip and the various Islands. I have totally lost contact with the members of the CIC/Radarmen and the basketball team. Keywords: USS Hanna DE 449 September 1952-March 1954: two Pacific cruises, one to Korea 52-53 and South Pacific Islands 1953-54. Radarman 3rd Class. Played on the Hanna basketball team in San Diego, Guam, and Japan. During our explosive trip to the east Coast of Korea in November 1952, I was the telephone talker for Lt. Lee, the Gunnery Officer, on the mast of the ship. |

COMBAT PATROL, NOV.24. 1952 |
| DONALD CARSON wrote on April 29, 2008 City and State: OAKRIDGE OR Unit: USS HANNA DE449 Service or Relationship: NAVY VETERAN Comments: I served aboard the USS Hanna in 1952. I was a Fireman apprentice at that time. On Nov. 24, 1952, just before the shore batteries opened up on us, I was sitting out on deck faceing seaward, when I saw the first geyser of water shoot up from the the first round fired from the Korean coast, I immediatly headed for my battle station which was in the aft fireroom. I was about half way down the ladder into the fireroom, when the second round fired at us hit the side of the ship, a few feet from where MM3 Potts and I were standing. After the smoke cleared a little, I saw that he had been hit and he fell down to a lower deck. I went to him and tried to lift him up to shipmates there above me. This was very difficult as every time the ship would roll, vast amounts of water came in from the large hole from the shell burst. I would like to hear from anyone who was on the ship at that time. Keywords: Shore Battery engagement, Nov 24. 1952 |

| PATTI O'LEARY wrote on August 3, 2005 City and State: Unit: Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: My father was a fire control tech during the Korean Conflict. He helped put out a fire in the ammunition section of the ship when the ship was hit Nov 1952. I am looking for anyone who may have information regarding that incident. My father is well, and we are trying to put a book together for him. He received a bronze star for his efforts that day, but the Navy has lost the records of the initial recommendation, even though they do have the record of the bronze star. Keywords: |
