Comments: I boarded the Hamner in San Diago and enjoyed seeing many Far East ports. Sasebo, Hawaii, Phillipines, Hong Kong, etc. Many happy memories even though I served on the Hamner for only a short time. I would love to hear from anyone who served with me in the '63-'64 timeframe.

Comments: Captain William S. Finn, USN (Ret)passed away on October 5, 2003 due to heart failure. Captain Finn was born in New York City in 1914, to emigrant parents from Ireland and Scotland.

He graduated from Stuyvesant High School and entered the U.S. Naval Academy, graduating with the class of 1938. Reporting to duty in Hawaii, he was the duty officer on board USS Dolphin (SS169) when Pearl Harbor was attacked December 7, 1941, and was aboard her as well during the Battle of Midway.

After command of the USS Archerfish (SS311), he taught at the Naval Academy and was Captain of the USS Hamner (DD718) during the Korean War. He later had command of Destroyer Division 52, the USS Prairie (AD15), and the Service Schools at the Naval Training Center in San Diego. He retired with the rank of Captain in 1967.

Comments: It is doubtful that any one will remember me but if I get lucky let me hear from you.

Keywords: I spent my last several months on the ship. It was some of the best duty that I had during my four years in the navy. I was a master of arms. I have always thought that the reason was I wouldn't have to stand watches and might consider staying in. I had some great times while tied up to buoy # 25 and into Deigo every night. My tour aboard was short but had the rest of my naval experience been as good, I am sure I would have stayed in.
