He worked in the engine room and has recently been diagnosis with Mesothelioma, a lung cancer cased by asbestos exposure. He said he work for 4 years exposed to it while on the ship....anyone with information on shipmates, who have been diagnosed with this type of cancer, please contact me. Hailey was homeported Newport, RI. We plane guarded in Pensacola, in Boston Naval Yards Summer 1956, Gitmo shakedown cruise and Med cruise summer,1957. We went thru the Suez Canal summer, 1957 and operated in Red Sea for a month. Had liberty in Aden, Aden which I believe is called Dubai now. I stayed in the Naval Reserve with my last sixteen years in RNMCB-28 Seabee Unit. Keywords: USS Hailey DD-556
