Comments: MY HUSBAND, ROBERT C. MCCANN, WAS ONBOARD THE USS
GURKE DD783 DURING THE INVASION OF INCHON. HE WROTE
OF SOME THINGS THAT HAD HAPPENED AND THE NOTEBOOK IS
STILL FAINTLY LEGIBLE. I'M WONDERING IF ANY OF THE
SHIPMATES THAT WERE WITH HIM DURING THIS TIME HAD
KEPT ANY NOTES OR DESCRIPTIONS OF WHAT WAS GOING ON.
HE TOLD ME THAT HE WAS EMBARRASSED TO GO TO THE
SICKBAY FOR A WOUND THAT HE HAD RECEIVED ON HIS LEG
THAT TORE HIS UNIFORM FROM SOME SCHRAPNEL THAT WAS
FIRED FROM AN ENEMY. HE TOLD ME THAT THERE WERE TOO
MANY THAT WERE DEAD OR DYING TO REPORT HIS LITTLE
MISHAP. IF THIS IS TRUE THEN AN INVESTIGATION NEEDS
TO BE DONE TO SEE IF ANY OTHER SAILORS WERE THERE
WHEN THIS HAPPENED. MANY ARE PROBABLY NOW DECEASED AS
MY HUSBAND PASSED AWAY ON APRIL 28, 2005. HE WOULD
THIS MONTH BE 82 YEARS OLD.
MY HUSBAND PLAYED THE MANDOLIN AND ENTERTAINED WITH
OTHER SHIPMATES ONBOARD AND OFF. HE WAS ALSO IN THE
GOLDEN GLOVES BOXING. I HAVE A PICTURE OF HIM IN A
RING WITH HIS BOXING GLOVES ON AND SAILORS ALL AROUND
HIM.

Comments: We are trying to locate and contact former members of the Korean War who served aboard the following destroyers: USS DeHaven (DD-727), USS Mansfield (DD-728), USS Collett (DD-730), USS Lyman K. Swenson (DD-729), USS Henderson (DD-785) and USS Gurke (DD-783). The destroyers comprised Destroyer Squadron 9 (DESRON9) and became known as The Sitting Duck Squadron, for their pre-invasion assault on Wolmi-Do Island at Inchon, Korea on September 13, 1950. These six ships received the Navy Unit Commendation for their bravery and heroism on this historic day.

We like to locate veterans of DESRON9 to determine potential interest for organizing a Sitting Duck Squadron Reunion, to be held in 2004 at a yet to be determined location in the United States.

SHADOW BOX FOR DON WILSON

Comments: Hello, I'm Don Wilson's daughter. My dad is now deceased and I'm trying to gather a memorial shadow box of his time as a member of the Naval Armed Forces for my mom. I'm looking for help in identifying what medals/ribbons my dad should have. Any medals/ribbons my dad may have had are either lost, stolen, or otherwise gone. Can someone help me identify what he would have received? I have some listed on his discharge paper, but I know there are others he should have (like the newly released Korean War Medal and the Navy's Combat Action Ribbon). He served on the USS Gurke as a YN3 from Mar 53-Mar 57. Does anyone know where I could purchase these medals/ribbons or even a YN3 insignia from that era??? I would pay for any photographs he may be in also??? (I have no pictures of him in his uniform although I do have a picture of the Burke via the internet). This might be a tall order, but I'd sincerely appreciate any little help I can get.
