Comments: This is the first ship I was on as a Marine Grunt. We sailed from Hawaii on 2 April 1967 with , I believe, USS Cavalier and USS Bexar. Our destination was Camp Pendleton for Operation Alligator Hide. I remember that one of our Marines, in rough weather slipped on the wet wood slat deck and went over board, we turned around and picked him up, lucky man. What has happened to APA 27 George Clymer? Anyone remember this operation? Semper Fi......Bill

Comments: I spent some time on the clymer in the early 60's but; when I was in the engine room I believe that it was powered by recip steam 2 or 4 cylinders. I remember it was hot and It had a tall water cooler in the engine room. All information I can find is it was powered by turbine steam. I also remember that in the stern the emergency rudder power unit was a 4 cylinder volkswagon engine, which replaced a flatheat engine. I seem to remember that the crank to change the rudder was huge and it took two men to operate. I also thought that I was told that it was prior to WWII the US America. we carried 1000 marines out of San Diego, CA I stay above decks in a rather plush cabin, with rather impressive light fixtures. In the ships store I purchased several place patches that have the name of USS George Clymer on it and I still have one. I am some what confused when I look at information described by others. I also enjoyed going into the shaft galley and watching the shaft turn, and it was explain to me that the extra shaft could be replaced with going ing port in case of emergencies. Also we took turnes firing on dropped targets of the fan tail, with small arms, and 50 cal machineguns. I lso remember I went and met the personel who ground the garbage and was astounded to know such a position and section existed. My mind must be loosing a few ingrams, I would like to know more about the ship and it's history. Sorry I am not Navy but I am 20 yrs + Army. I was assigned to the intell, consec section for several different cruises. I also spent so time with this ship in the 56? when I was a exployer scout, I went on a three day cruise and participated in a landing exercise near conorado. Any information would be received with thanks John W. Horne CSM (E-9) retired

Comments: I was on the George Clymer from 1960-1962, just between Korea and Vietnam. Lucky I guess. Have fond memories of spending my later teen-age years on George and going on the the Wespac cruises. Was part of the Radio Gang. Does anyone know what happened to the ship? Have been web surfing to find out, but to not avail. My fear is that they used her for target practice, but I hope not. It would be great to go aboard her again. If anyone knows, please respond! Thanks, Burt

Comments: I went aboard the USS George Clymer APA 27 in mid summer 1947 untill a few days after the Inchon landing, was then transfered to a LSU Squadron for temperary duty, never saw the Clymer after that. I was in the Inchon area untill the withdrall, then was shortly after that shiped home and in 1952 was discharged, never saw the Clymer again. Would like to find out when reunions are scheduled and allso hear from mates that served on the Clymer from 47 untill 50 especally those in operations department, I was a quartermaster/signalman (QM3) I would also like to know when the Clymer was decomissioned. Finding info

I was searching the WEB for information regarding my fathers NAVY
activities and have not had much luck. I thought you might be able to
point me in the right direction.

He was in the NAVY and in Korea from 09/50 - 09/51 aboard the APA-27 or
George Clymer. I've been able to determine he made the landings at
Inchon in September 1950 then went to the East side along with the
Battleship Iowa and that's about all. I'm looking for history for that
period with that boat.

Can you help?

Update: As it turns out, I was able to determine the Deck Logs were
available for his boat. After a small process to order the records and
a 6 week wait (plus some cash) I received the logs from my dads ship
for the 13 months he was on it. These are detailed deck logs in daily
increments of 4 hour watches. It lists EVERYTHING the ship was doing
and narrows it to within the 4 hour block. It was approx 450 pages
(legal size) of the actual logs.

I then took them to a local printing company and had them sprial bound.
Then came his birthday and what a surprise!

If you need any of the link addresses, I think I still have them around.
Thanks for taking the time to check up.

Thanks.

Great web site! I am looking for information on the flag division
of the USS George Clymer during the periods between 1952-1955.
A few of us have a reunion every year in Tenn. But, we are interested
in what happened to the ship and where we can get a complete list
of those who served with us.

Thank you.
