Comments: I was the Bugler, Librarian and Photographer. Went aboard in Vallejo, CA 5/52 while the George was in drydock. We spent 10 months in Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Phillipines and Okinawa. On our way home from Japan we stopped in Hawaii. On the second day there I walked down the dock to the USS Renville which left for the states the next day. I was on my way to Photography School in Pensacola. Have you ever been to one of the ship's reunions? I went to the one in Clymer, PA and the first one in San Diego. Take care, Sid Blair

Would also like to know when and were the Clymer was decommisioned? Was this old African Planet converted to an APA scrapped or is it still afloat? I want to thank those of you have helped me fill in some blanks about the Comodore during the years 53, 54, 55. Holman the Yeoman

One long, hot trip |

Michael Krever wrote on 2003-05-08 14:20:08.0
Comments: My first shipboard experience. In '61 I was a corpsmen with the 3rd Mar Div on my way to Okinawa from San Diego. My recollection of the Clymer was that the 02 deck was made of wood, there was no air conditioning, and because we had a commodore aboard, we had daily GQ during which we had to go into a very hot hold in full gear. The trip took 42 days. It wasn't a pleasant experience. Slept on deck because it was too hot in the troop compartment.

Finding info
On Tue, 28 Oct 97
Scott Strance Email address wrote:
I was searching the WEB for information regarding my fathers NAVY
activities and have not had much luck. I thought you might be able to
point me in the right direction.
He was in the NAVY and in Korea from 09/50 - 09/51 aboard the APA-27 or
George Clymer. I've been able to determine he made the landings at
Inchon in September 1950 then went to the East side along with the
Battleship Iowa and that's about all. I'm looking for history for that
period with that boat.
Can you help?
Update: As it turns out, I was able to determine the Deck Logs were
available for his boat. After a small process to order the records and
a 6 week wait (plus some cash) I received the logs from my dads ship
for the 13 months he was on it. These are detailed deck logs in daily
increments of 4 hour watches. It lists EVERYTHING the ship was doing
and narrows it to within the 4 hour block. It was approx 450 pages
(legal size) of the actual logs.
I then took them to a local printing company and had them sprial bound.
Then came his birthday and what a surprise!
If you need any of the link addresses, I think I still have them around.
Thanks for taking the time to check up.
Thanks.
