Went aboard in Vallejo, CA 5/52 while the George was in drydock. We spent 10 months in Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Phillipines and Okinawa. On our way home from Japan we stopped in Hawaii. On the second day there I walked down the dock to the USS Renville which left for the states the next day. I was on my way to Photography School in Pensacola. In '61 I was a corpsmen with the 3rd Mar Div on my way to Okinawa from San Diego. My recollection of the Clymer was that the 02 deck was made of wood, there was no air conditioning, and because we had a commodore aboard, we had daily GQ during which we had to go into a very hot hold in full gear. Made QN3 next WESTPAC Cruise, was Special Sea Detail Helmsman along with various other details, after steering Helmsman, a lots of time was TAD to PHIBRON III because I stood watches in port on the signal Bridge.
