USS Gardiner's Bay AVP39 1955-56

Comments: I served aboard as hospital corpsman 3rd class on this tour and onley remember a few names ie Johnny Shanahan, Gee. I believe the skipper's name was Short.I would like to hear from others who served aboard at that time. I remember that tour as one of the highlights of my four years Navy service.

Capt. Dodson

Comments: Michael Dodson: I served under your father, Red Dod- son, as Chief Engineer 1952-53. Was also aboard in 1951 under Frank Raysbrook and Joe Young. All were good leaders. Home port was North Island and in Wes- Pac we saw Japan, Korea, the Pescadores (then Form- osa) and Hong Kong, where the Gardiners Bay served as an air-sea rescue unit for a year. I remember your Dad being an adept and enthusiastic unicyclist. Great memories.

Comments: My father, Capt. Lucian "Red" Dodson, was the CO of the Gardiners Bay during the Korean War. He retired from the Navy in 1957 to be a senior managing engineer for RCA at Cape Kennedy, FL. He was very fond of the ship and her crew.

WW 2

Comments: I JOINED THE SHIP AT PEARL HARBOR IN 1946 AND VISITED ISLANDS THRUOUT THE PACIFIC. IT WAS THE BEST DUTY IN THE NAVY AT THAT TIME.....TRANSITIONING FROM THE WARTIME TO THE PEACETIME NAVY. SHORTLY BEFORE OPERATION CROSSROADS I WAS TRANSFERRED TO THE SALISBURY SOUND.....AND LATER DISCHARGED FROM THE SHIP.

Comments: Served four years aboard USS Gardiners Bay 1952-1955. Went to Far East four times. Been in contact with Benny Kirkendoll for fifty years, recently with Paul Boriskie. USS GARDINERS BAY

Comments: I WAS A RADIO GUNNER IN VP-46 IN 1951 AND 1952. I WAS A PASSENGER ON THE GARDINERS BAY FROM MID SEPTEMBER 1951 UNTIL ABOUT OCTOBER FIRST 1951. OUR SQUADRON WAS BEING TRANSFERED FROM NORTH ISLAND SAN DIEGO CALIFORNIA TO IWAKUNI,JAPAN. ALTHOUGH I HAD BEEN TRAINED AS A RADAR-RADIO GUNNER, I WAS STILL A SEAMAN FIRST CLASS AT THE TIME, SO WHEN WE LEFT HAWAII I WAS GIVEN THE MOST IMPORTANT TASK ON THE SHIP. I WAS ASSIGNED TO RUN THE LAUNDRY. ACTUALLY THIS WAS ONE OF THE BEST JOBS AS I GOT TO WORK ON THE OUTER DECK AREA INSTEAD OF INSIDE THE SHIP.AND WHEN WE GOT TO COOLER AREAS IT WAS PROBABLY THE MOST COMFORTABLE AREA AS IT WAS WARM. Comments: I served on the USS Gardiners Bay(AVP-39) from late 1956 until it was given away to the Norwegian Navy July of 1958. Cooked many meals for the men. Along with me was Chief McKenna, William (BUDA) Hudson CS 1, Sterret CS 2, Atkinson CS 3 and a few more that skips my mind. Our officer in charge was LTJG John He once told me when I was getting discharged to stay in and make it a career. He said he is and he will make Rear Admiral. He did. In the early 70's he was in charge of the Military Supply Depot in South Philadelphia.

Engine Room

Comments: I sailed on the Gardiners Bay, doing duty in the after engine room, from March 1953 until June 1954. My twin brother, Jack Latham was on board also. He was an air dale. I would like to communicate with any of my old shipmates. One shipmate, and buddy, which I have been unable to locate was Henry Riggs. Rigss was a fireman in the forward engine room.

USS Gardiners Bay AVP37

Comments: Glad to read Bob Settles comments about our deployment June thru Nov. 1955. He forgot about the peacock hunt in the boon docks outside of Nha Trang. While tied up there two U.S. Army officers came aboard. They had been sent to advise S. Vietnamese army..very hasty departue from U.S..and they were begging any supplies..food, mosquito nets etc.we could provide. They and 12 others at other sites were the fore-runners of the 600,000 eventually sent

Gardiners Bay Radioman

Comments: Served as a radioman from summer of 1953 until fall of 1956. Was called home on emergency leave while the ship was station ship Hong Kong. Watched the 1956 World Series from home while those on board were listening on short wave radio. Had a lot of buddies whose names I cannot remember and some that I can. Ben Kirkendoll, Rus Evans, Ernie Lomsdalen, Martin Doncouse, - Wilhelm, - Beckham, - Flaugher, and many others on the edge of my memmory.

Past reunions organized in great part by Jerry Chatelain (EN3/C, 1948-1952) have been real treats to attend. The last one, held in Seattle, August 21-26, 2001, was coordinated by Art and Lorraine Larson, Dale and Margaret Smith, and George Bess and Mildred Tricinella.

Gardiner's Bay (AVP-39)

Comments: I was the disbursing Officer on the Gardiner's Bay from 1954 to 1956. It seemed our primary mission was monitoring aircraft traffic all over the far east. Our cripto shack was manned 24 hours a day, and all officers stood regular duty in the shack. We made one trip into Keelung, Formosa, a trip into the Pescadores where we say the gunboats of the Nationalist Navy (frequently sitting high and dry), and on two extended occasions we worked as the Station Ship in Hong Kong, providing boarding parties for the visiting sailors on R&R to the area. In a year and a half we 'tended' a seaplane on one occasion. It developed trouble and had landed in the harbor in Nha Trang, Indochina (Viet Nam). We were dispatched by COMAIRPAC to leave Hong Kong immediately, and render assistance as needed to the PBM and its crew. About all we were capable of doing was to hold their hands until real assistance arrived. That's what we did. We actually refueled a PBM in the Pescadores on one occasion, but it may have been a training exercise??

Comments: ON about 49-'50 @ the Phlipines sea base, at the Manila Bay entrance ( Sangley Point?)... Your ship had an elec TECH (AT) that I went to school (Memphis) with.. I called him on the VHF from a PBM in the water, and he came over with tools and a boat to help me adjust the MAD ASW equip for next-day sub hunting war games.... ARE you he? or know about this ?
