AFTER ENGINE ROOM 1958 TO 1961 |
| HAROLD CHEETWOOD wrote on July 20, 2008 CITY AND STATE: LAKE ELSINORE CA UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: NAVY VETERAN Comments: Went to the Knox right out of boot camp in Sept 58. Worked and did my watches in the After engine room for the 3 years on board. Left the ship just before it finished the fram overhaul at Mare Island. Had a ball with the locals in vallejo. Cruise night every night of the week. Good times for sure, same thing in San Diego while I was going to A/C and R school. Lot of good memories, the west Pac cruises and the trip to Australia. I just can't remember a lot of my shipmates names. I do remember Dave Waddell an engine man EN 3, The Wanlass brothers, both MM's, Danny Oneal BT, Tim Britz who ran the machine shop, Bolinsky (SP) I think a BT. He and his partner run the slush fund, Ketcham I think he was a BT 1, there was also 2 other brothers out of Yuma, AZ. Maybe the Johnson brothers?? both MM's. Went to MM school at Great Lakes (1959) and air conditioning and refrigeration school(1960) in San Diego while serving on the Frank Knox. Have been in the HVAC business from the time of my discharge in 1962 until I retired last year. Thank you Navy for that. Keywords: |

| HARRY ABBOTT wrote on August 7, 2005 CITY AND STATE: UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: NAVY VETERAN Comments: Knox on the rocks I was on the Knox when she ran a ground. Reading some of the posts brings back memories like it was yesterday. Im going to be sixty next month and my short term memory sucks. but I can remember that barge and the names of most of the men on it and the men trying to tie it down to the main deck . I was on the main deck trying to keep the barge from smashing hedge hogs like they were eggs. I thought I would pee my pants every time the barge hit the side of the ship and crushed a hedge hog All of the men on the barge and on the main deck were friends of mine. Hit the beach with all of them at one time or another. Before the storm the ships diver Scott went over the side to assess the damage. He was a big ol red head boy from Texas use to work the oil fields. This man had balls. there were sharks in that water twice his size.. Scott was on the barge, Pat Paterson BM3 and Pat Paterson BM2, Henderson BM2, RenskersBM3, Dwight Marshal BM3, Mike Downs, Jerry Boyd, Jerry Voss, Bull GM3(real last name) CobbGM3, Phillips BMSN,SweeneyBM3. Two officers on the barge. the acting XO. I believe he was from Boston cant remember his name everyone liked him. and a JG, I think it was Mr. Brown . After the barge was pulled away I sat in the barber shop With Klimas the barber and mellowed out until they passed out the little plastic bags for our wallets. Oh Crap!!!! BRAVE CREWMATES SAVE KNOX |
| WILLIAM DALL wrote on January 2, 2002 CITY AND STATE: UNIT: SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: - Comments: A number of the sixty three residual crew members left aboard the Knox should have received recognition for saving their ship from virtual destruction. After Knox was beached on Pratus reef; tropical storms took an awful tole on her hull when a barge loaded with her fuel oil and sixty five tons of munitions repeatedly slammed into her starboard quarter. Initially we laid our bodies over the stacks of every high explosive imaginable. The hulls crashed together and some of the munitions started to slide off the edge of the barge. When the barge came to the end of its cable tether, it would rebound and crash into Knox. A combination of this hammering effect and explosives rolling overboard gives rise to the question; what if the hammer, anvil and explosives all come together at the same time! Because I'm writing this, you can conclude that we did not die. It was only by the grace of God that I'm here to write about this to you. I don't have the names of those brave men; they know who they are. I think in all fairness that our Navy should recognize the saving of our ship Frank Knox DDR-742 Keywords: |

Some local Arkansas newspapers dubbed the ship "USS Thornton" in articles featuring them. Would like to correspond with anyone who might remember them to get a better idea of their military history for my family research. Thank you. Keywords: |

| JANICE BROWNING WILSON wrote on January 13, 2001 CITY AND STATE: LUTZ FL UNIT: ???? SERVICE OR RELATIONSHIP: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: My father was a radarman on the USS Knox during World War II. I have photos of friends and fellow shipmates which may be of use to someone needing information. I do not know too much other than my dad was in a typhoon on the Knox and had to be sent home for a mental breakdown. The time period should be around 1945. His name is Billy C. Browning and is now deceased. Keywords: USS Knox |
