Comments: Went to the Knox right out of boot camp in Sept 58. Worked and did my watches in the After engine room for the 3 years on board. Left the ship just before it finished the fram overhaul at Mare Island. Had a ball with the locals in vallejo. Cruise night every night of the week. Good times for sure, same thing in San Diego while I was going to A/C & R school. Lot of good memories, the west Pac cruises and the trip to Australia. I just can't remember a lot of my shipmates names. I do remember Dave Waddell an engine man EN 3, The Wanlass brothers, both MM's, Danny Oneal BT, Tim Britz who ran the machine shop, Bolinsky (SP) I think a BT. He and his partner run the slush fund, Ketcham I think he was a BT 1, there was also 2 other brothers out of Yuma, AZ. Maybe the Johnson brothers?? both MM's. Went to MM school at Great Lakes (1959) and air conditioning and refrigeration school(1960) in San Diego while serving on the Frank Knox. Have been in the HVAC business from the time of my discharge in 1962 until I retired last year. Thank you Navy for that.

Comments: Reported aboard at Long Beach in OCT 61 just prior to leaving for Yokosuka. Have many memories of the tour of duty. Remember making the movie "No Man Is An Island" with Jeffery Hunter, being station ship for 30 days in Hong Kong and our patrols into the Yellow Sea. Advanced to YN1 in May 63 and departed the KNOX for a tour of shore duty in SEP 63.

Comments: When I was tfrd.from MM School Great Lakes to S. D. Naval shipyard to board the Frank Knox. I was late a few days and the Frankie K was later than me. She had to get repaired in Hi. before coming stateside. We couldn't go fast enough to drop our depth charges on the way to Mare Island in 1958. Captain Case was a "Mustang" prev. mach. mate, so he was down there with us and couldn't get any more out of it. That was the way the next 4 years went aboard my favorite Lady. I was in the fwd. eng.room then took over as the Logroom yoeman. Everything was changed in the Fram II overhaul and I got discharged then.
Keywords: Does anyone remember when we were chasing a sub. out of San Diego about 1959 or 60? Had the 7th Fleet out for 3 days & nights and then it surfaced. Was a whale. Typical of the rummies we had on board those days. Would like to hear from anyone who served then.

Comments: Knox on the rocks I was on the Knox when she ran a ground. Reading some of the posts brings back memories like it was yesterday. Im going to be sixty next month and my short term memory sucks. but I can remember that barge and the names of most of the men on it and the men trying to tie it down to the main deck . I was on the main deck trying to keep the barge from smashing hedge hogs like they were eggs. I thought I would pee my pants every time the barge hit the side of the ship and crushed a hedge hog All of the men on the barge and on the main deck were friends of mine. Hit the beach with all of them at one time or another. Before the storm the ships diver Scott went over the side to assess the damage. He was a big ol red head boy from Texas use to work the oil fields. This man had balls. there were sharks in that water twice his size.. Scott was on the barge, Pat Paterson BM3 and Pat Paterson BM2, Henderson BM2, RenskersBM3, Dwight Marshal BM3, Mike Downs, Jerry Boyd, Jerry Voss, Bull GM3(real last name) CobbGM3, Phillips BMSN,SweeneyBM3. Two officers on the barge. the acting XO. I believe he was from Boston cant remember his name everyone liked him. and a JG, I think it was Mr. Brown . After the barge was pulled away I sat in the barber shop With Klimas the barber and mellowed out until they passed out the little plastic bags for our wallets. Oh Crap!!!!
Like to hear from old ship mates Harry Abbott

I have no idea how much it will cost? But if there is a charge. Let me know, I hope I can afford it. Thank You,

Comments: Hi, I was trying to find the name of the fourth destroyer in our squadron in 1951-55, when I happened on to this website. I was an IC Communications Electrician aboard the USS Frank and remember the Hollister and Ozburn, but the name of the fourth ship escapes me. The Knox published an album, filled with comments and pictures, of our Pacific Cruise in 1952, which I still have, but that doesn't help me. It sure brings back lots of old memories though, like: Captain John with the bullets in his ears, and, I think, the only brig on a destroyer in the US Navy.

I did go into other sights and have found pictures and a brief history
of where she served. I am trying to find out where she is now and will
go to the library to look in the DANFS to see if she has been
destroyed. Thank you for putting this site together.
