Comments: I am looking for information on Boiler Technician, Robert James Searle who died on June 3, 1969 after the collision with the HMAS Melbourne. This is research for our local (Torrance, CA) Veterans' War Memorial Wall. Any rememberances would be welcome, so that the Torrance Historical Society can put a more personal history of a man who is now a "name on a wall"

Comments: ...yeah, turned out by the Nation's school systems and bound by the traditions of a family's code to "serve the country", I think most of us at that time fell into that category.
I am proud to this day of my shipmates. I think constantly of those that went away that dark morn.
In a non-illustrious life of hum-drum existence, I look upon my time with my crew as the highlight of my youth. Together we became men and those of us that still maintain contact with each other look at tired and worn bodies, but into eyes that shine crystal clear and beam with pride in knowing each other.
My Brothers, I salute you, our fallen shipmates, and all those that have gone on to our Creator.

CREW MAN INFO REQUEST

Comments: I was an RAN navy brat who was taken on board (I think) - FE Evans for a tour whilst she was tied alongside the wharf at HMAS Tarangau. I remember being frightened by a crew man who suddenly popped out from a hatch in the after end of the ship. To calm me down a tallish African American (early 20's I believe he worked in the laundry)crew member offered me his hat. I lost the hat some years later and the name of that crewman with it. I would like to establish whether or not this crew man lost his life in the collision of 1969 or not, whether he survived and if he is still alive today. My connection with the other ship with which HMAS Melbourne collided in 1964 was my God-father (Chief Petty Officer Engine Room Artificer) Kevin Fanker surviving this incident. Our up stairs neighbour in the units in which we lived lost her husband Electrician Leonard Teape in this collision, I still recall the early morning in the aftermath and only several weeks later the 3rd birthday of Leonard's children. In 1996 I lost brothers in the Special Air Service Regiment killed in the Black Hawk Disaster at Townsville. I can be contacted on email:
raemec@hotmail.com or raemec@gmail.com

Thank you for any assistance enabling me to find the FE Evans crew man (or a family contact with whom I can correspond) if in fact it was the FE Evans that visited my childhood home port.

Keywords: Re: African American crewman on USS Frank E Evans.
Did FE Evans have a stopover at HMAS Tarangau (PNG) prior to sailing to Phillipines and her fateful end?

He had surgery and was off the ship until about three weeks before it sailed. He was transferred back on. I was expecting our child. I had worked on the Navy base at the annex. I saw his ship off and then I flew home to Kentucky. That was the last time I saw Tom. His son, Tom, would like to know about his dad. If anyone out there remembers Tom and would like to share something about him to his son, please email me so I can pass it on to him. Also, does anyone know why the names of those who died are not on the Wall Thank you. Nancy Tallon
