Comments: I was one of 5 naval officers "drafted" in Tokyo to land with 42 enlisted men, elements of the US 1st Marine Division and the British Royal Marine Commandos in Hungnam, North Korea. We were in first wave ashore in Hungnam from US President Jackson. No opposition. Stayed in Hungnam to run port and surpervise evacuation of wounded Army, Marine, Gooks and Chinese to hospital ship.
Had power from Chosin Resevoir until Chinese intevention. Then called in USS Foss DE 59 to provide power for the port, critical during the evacutaion of the wounded, the dead, tanks, trucks, artillery and civilians.
I was made a member of the Chiefs' group aboard the Foss by verbal acclamation when I gave them a gallon of alcohol which we had squirreled away for an occasional nip. We slavaged all government property we could when we evacuated on Christmas Eve 1951, but I thought the men who had brought us power deserved a little treat.

Comments: Fleet Activities Group One was assembled at Yokohoma Naval Station and caught the Foss to Chinnampo, set up house keeping, established Harbor control and general fleet activities operations. There was only one radioman in the group, Me. I taught two seamen our CW callsign. When they heard our call they would fetch or wake me up. We left on two LCVP's when the Chinese came over the thirty eight parallel. We caught a merchant ship (North Wind) The ship could not handle the small boats. The Group was loaded by way of a cargo net hung over the side. The last time I saw the LCVP's they were full ahead in the Yellow Sea. Looking back toward Chinnampo one could see a huge black cloud of smoke. The army had set fire to all.
Very respectful, William E. Clower LCDR USN Ret.
PS. In the write up on Chinnampo, the author wondered what happened to the LCVP's at Chinnampo. Please send him a copy of this note.

Comments: The Foss was a great ship with a great crew. Most memoriable character was Gerry Isabel. He could make you laugh at your mother's funeral! Worked the New York Times cross-word puzzles, all entries either all horizontal or all vertical. Also a great pinochle player.(The national sport in the C Division.

Comments: I had been out of Navy for 49 yrs and never spoke with anyone (Outside my shipmates) who ever heard of Chinnampo. Then I read an article by Kimber White in the Graybeards. He spoke of Chinnampo. I obtained his address and the correspondence flew back and forth for over a year. He sent me copies of the Lighthouse (The Fosses newsletter) I sent him articles from Sea Classic Magazines. It was a great relationship with a man I never met personally. I can only say, I would have loved to worked under this officer while in the Navy. I hope you Foss Mates felt the same. You have truly lost a ship mate to be proud of. I would also like to thank Neil Campbell who kept me on Kimber's updated E-Mail list. I was an EN2 on the USS Okanogan APA 220 the night we evacuated Chinnampo with 2400 Koreans aboard.
