Erin Petrasovits wrote on 2009-10-19 23:34:41.0
Comments: My name is Erin and I was just looking for any information about my grandfather. His name was Richard Adams and I know he was a part of Operation Redwing, although I'm not sure what ship he was on. He died when I was two so I was just curious if anyone had any stories or remembers anything about him. Thanks so much.

Comments: My hobby is collecting any old or new World Paper Money. Along with the collection are also "Funny Money" items. Two of these items are a 5 cent bill and a 10 cent bill labeled JAPTAN ISLAND. They are both about one dollar size. They have a drawn coconut tree in the center with ENIWETOK underneath it. I have also been to Eniwetok. Each note has at the bottom "FIVE CENTS IN TRADE" AND "TEN CENTS IN TRADE" respectively. On each note where the U.S. notes have the letter in a circle showing where our money was printed, they have a similar symbol with JOINT TASK GROUP - 132.3 - RECREATION COUNCIL - PRINTED ABOARD - USS ESTES agc-12. I thought this might be of interest to you. If you happen to have any like this and have an extra copy, I would appreciate getting it. Both of mine are only in fair condition. Thank you. I am now thirty years of age and am very interested in finding out as much information as I can about this ship and about Operation RedWing. I know the ship was decommissioned in the winter of 1977. Was it scrapped or is it on display somewhere? Further, were can I get info about the ship? My father never really talked about his service, but now I want to find out.
Any help would be appreciated.

We picked up the Estes at Hunter's Point,San Francisco just as she was ready for her shakedown cruise and stayed aboard for for almost a year. After her shakedown we anchored in the middle of S.F. bay and spent a couple of days loading ammo. Then on to Pearl Harbor for De-gaussing. Our home port was Yokosuka Japan. In Korean waters we patroled both coasts but spent most of our time in Inchon takeing care of business.

to let folks know what it was like to be in the Navy during the late
forties and early fifties.
My father, Pat Clyde, was stationed in Guam before the war broke out. He
remembers Typhoon Allyn which hit Guam in 1949. He was still in Guam
when the North invaded the South in June of 1950. He remembers the Bob
Hope show visiting there in October 1950.
Dad was a Storekeeper on the USS ESTES ACG-12 when it was the Flagship
for Rear Admiral Tom B. Hill Commander Amphibious Group One, Commander
Task Force 90.
He participated in the Koje-Do Prison Riot supression in February 1952.
He has a great story about this action that includes having to climb
down the landing nets into the waiting boats during rough seas.
On 10 June of 1952 he transfered from ESTES to USS LENAWEE, APA-195.
Later in'52 he served on LST 836.
In the Fall of 1952 he participated in Operation IVY the Atomic Tests at
Eniwetok Proving Grounds, Marshall Islands conducted by the Army, Navy, Air
Force, and Atomic Energy Commission.
Any way, thanks again for keeping the memories alive. I have included a
picture of my father and some of his buddies on liberty in Japan in 51.
It's a pretty classic shot. There is a similar photograph of me and my
buddies in a hotel in the Philipines that was taken over twenty years
later!
best regards,
