SERVED ABOARD THE USS EPPERSON |
| JOSEPH DIXON wrote on April 16, 2005 City and State: BUTTE MT Unit: HOSPITAL CORPMAN STRIKER Service or Relationship: - Comments: Embarked Epperson when she was in dry dock in Pearl Harbor in Jan. 1956. Had to go over the side in dress blues to scrape and paint because sea bag was lost in transfer. Went to Wespac later that year and spent Xmas in Sasebo, Japan. Went TAD to Yokosuka for dental work. I had served most of my time on the ship as a corpman striker and served as a corpman at the Yokosuka hospital. Caught up with the ship in Hawaii prior to discharge in Nov. 1957. The ship had a rocket that was similiar to ship to surface missiles and when it was fired while under way the force would almost stop the ship. Went under some tough weather including the tail end of a typhoon off Taiwan. Before I became a corpman, my battle station was Sight Setter in the foreward five inch gun mount. I remember our gunnery was terrible and I don't remember receiving and E. In fact one time we came close to shooting down the aircraft that was draging the sleeve. Over all, I see my service as a wonderful experience typified by meeting and serving with some swell guys and seeing some places I would never have seen. GREAT UNCLE |
| DAVE EPPERSON II wrote on December 30, 2003 City and State: LEXINGTON KY Unit: N/A Service or Relationship: FAMILY MEMBER Comments: Harold Glenn Epperson is my grandfathers brother. I have read much information about the events of that day and about the ship itself. I have inquired on numerous boards about the whereabouts of the ship. If anyone can tell me I'd appreciate it. I also would like to thank the author of this site for allowing information about Harold to be posted on the net. Although I never knew my great uncle, I still feel like I have met him, just by seeing his picture and hearing my family talk about him. We all miss you Harold. We're coming home soon, leave the door open. Keywords: USS Epperson, Epperson, Harold, Glenn, Congressional Medal of Honor, DD 719 |

I SERVED ON THE EPPY |
| JUAN ROMERO wrote on December 16, 2003 City and State: LAS CUCES NM Unit: FORWARD BOILER ROOM Service or Relationship: - Comments: I THOUGHT I WOULD JUST WRITE AND LET YOU KNOW THAT I SERVED ON THE EPPERSON FROM DEC. 1961 THROUGH FEBRUARY 1964. WE WERE PART OF THE PINEAPPLE FLEET AT PEARL HARBOR DURING THIS TIME. I WENT ON MY ONE AND ONLY WESPAC DEPLOYMENT ON HER IN 1963. I WAS EIGHTEEN YEARS OLD AND WAS THERE UNTIL I WAS 20. I CAN ONLY TELL YOU THAT IT WAS A HARD SHIP TO BE ON. I WORKED IN THE FORWARD FIRE ROOM DURING THIS TIME. I THINK THAT WE WERE THE STEP CHILDREN OF THE SHIP AS WE HAD TO WORK PORT AND STARBOARD WHEN WE WERE UNDER WAY AND HAD TO CONTINUE WORKING WHEN WE CAME INTO PORT AS THE REST OF THE CREW WENT ON LIBERTY. I MUST HONESTLY SAY THAT I DIDN'T PARTICULARLY LIKE SERVING ABOARD THIS SHIP. I WAS GLAD WHEN I FINALLY GOT OFF OF IT AND WAS TRANSFERRED TO THE USS RICHARD B. ANDERSON OUT OF SAN DIEGO. Keywords: |
