Comments: I WAS ABOARD ELDORADO WHEN WE MADE THE TRIP TO INDONESIA AND AUSTRALIA IN 1960. WILL NEVER FORGET THE ADMIRAL WE HAD ON BOARD WHO HAD THE TWO MONKEYS IN A CAGE ON DECK. ONE DAY, THEY PIPED OVER PA SYSTEM, MONKEY OVERBOARD, SOMEONE BROKE IN THE CAGE AND THREW ONE OF THE MONKEYS OVERBOARD. WE SPENT A GOOD 3 HRS LOOKING FOR THAT MONKEY. AFTER THAT, THE ADMIRAL HAD A GUARD ON THE OTHER ONE. THAT ADMIRAL WAS A REAL DANDY.

Comments: I spent most of my time in Korea in Radio 3, a transmitter room, trying to keep the WW II transmitters going 24 hours a day. A flagship has lots and lots of radio traffic. I was also the master of the SCR-610, a horrible little Signal Corps Transceiver that was used for boat radios, although the salt spray did terrible things to it.

APRIL 21, 1946 LESTER L. HANSLEY

Column_1_Spacer Column_2_Spacer
Judy Betts wrote on 2000-07-13 00:59:59.0

Comments: I am the daughter of Lester Hansley who passed away on 6/27/00. My father was injured by a steel door that fell on his head and shoulder on 4-21-46 while on the USS Eldorado. He was disabled the entire remainder of his life from this accident, having agonizing headaches and severe shoulder and neck pain. As a child, I remember the endless nights I would hear him grind his teeth in pain. He never had a service connected injury. He was very proud of his service to his country and asked for nothing in return. He loved God, his family and his country more than life itself... He never spoke to us (his children) about his time in the war but I know it was horrible because of the many years of nightmares I'd hear him talk about the Japanese when he wasn't grinding his teeth in pain. I am now 43 years old and for 43 years watched my father suffer in beautiful silence, never complaining, he was always fine when you asked how he was doing. He was the most honorable man I have ever known. For his honor and for the record, I feel it is my duty as I have had the great privilege of being his daughter, to make it my life's goal to try to get his country to honor the fact that his lifetime of suffering was due to his injury on that fateful day of April 21, 1946 aboard the USS Eldorado. He is gone now, but I know in my heart that he would be proud to know that it was recorded and finally acknowleged his sacrifice. I have some documentation, but need more as most were destroyed in a fire at the base where they were stored. Anyone serving aboard the Eldorado on April 21, 1946 through October 12, 1946 and knew my father Lester L. Hansley, please contact me with any information you may have about him, however insignificant it may be, it may be of some help. I want to do this as a final gift to my daddy. betts@mail.clis.com, Judy Betts, 2472 Cedar Island Rd., Cedar Island, NC 28520

Just found your page for the Navy. I did not find my ship the
USS Eldorado AGC-11. We had at least two trip to Japan and Korea. We
were an Amphibious Task Force Communication ship. We had landings and
withdrawals of troops.

It made at least two trips from the US to Japan and Korea during the
Police action. We had a Two Star Admiral on board.

Would like to find any personnel of the ship.

I am looking for any information on the USS Eldorado and its crew.

Information on this would be around June 21, 1951. I am trying to track
down some of the crew for a friend of mine. He was on this ship last
before he was injured.

Again I would appreciate any information you could give me or any other
areas that you would have me search.

Thanking you in advance,
