Comments: In october 1950 was aboard the USS Eldorado from Pusan S.Korea to Iwon N.Korea (invasion). I was assigned to the 7th Infantry General Staff. The Eldorado was the first and only Navy ship (out of seven) that I was on.I Remeber that the chow, and the crew were great.Ended up at the Chosin Res; Yalu River and the evacuation of Hungnam, aboard the Ocala Victory. A few years ago at Pensacola A/S, I met a fellow shipmate who was aboard at the same time. I have since obtained a Eldorado hat and would really like a picture of the ship

1959-60 Westpac Cruise of USS Eldorado |
 |
 |
Emil Schultz wrote on 2004-02-12 21:44:43.0
Comments: I am responding to Tom Ryan's account of the Eldorado's WestPac Cruise of 1959-60 during which time our TACRON 13 rode the ship sporadically. It was an extremely interesting cruise even though it did not seem so at the time. TACRON 13 was mainly involved in the air control for amphibious assaults and generally attached to the Squadron Staff during deployment. We were based at NAS, North Island while stateside. In 1959, we steamed out of San Diego on the USS George Clymer, another ancient APA which had participated at the North African invasion (Torch) of WWII along with the Eldorado. When we reached Yokosuka, we relieved the TACRON (11 or 12) which was on the USS Estes and became part of the "ready" force. From then on our TACRON set up (in Eldorado) our own tactical communications and functioned to handle air support for amphibious operations. When not involved in exercises, many of us worked with the ship's company standing deck and communications watches. In that capacity, I may even had contact with RM Tom Ryan, but after 43 years, my memory of the ship's company is pretty vague. I did stand a ton of Communication watches, but mainly for Staff traffic.
The flag officer was RADM Trieble, who was a notable submarine skipper during WWII and the story was that it was his "twilight" cruise before retirement. We made a memorable cruise through the Inland Sea of Japan, visiting Osaka, Beppu, and some other interesting places. Prior to cruising to Surabaya, Indonesia and Australia, we made several stops through the Phillipines (besides Subic Bay) including Iloilo, Cebu City, Davao, and Zamboanga. Our Crossing the Line ceremonies was spectacular, during which I took a roll of 8mm film on a new Canon movie camera. Still have the film along with a number of stills which were given out by somebody in the PIO section. The rest of the trip to Australia (Sydney and Brisbane) was a terrific experience for a young, 24-year-old, Reserve Ensign. One that I have never forgotten. And I do remember the "Monkey Overboard" incident and the fact that the Australian newspapers picked it up somehow. I don't think the Admiral was real happy about losing his little friend, but we all thought it might have been a good idea, had he given it swimming instructions in the ceremonial pool. We also managed to stop at Pago, Pago, Samoa on the way back to San Diego. I have not looked back at any records that I may have around here, so some of the account may be vague. I did not receive a cruise book for the period, if there was ever one published. I did take some still photos also, mostly slides that are beginning to fade My next duty station was USS Paul Revere (APA-248) as Comm. Officer during her 1960-61 Westpac deployment, which I can assure you was nowhere near as interesting as the memorable months on the Eldorado. EOS

Comments: My name is Billy Quinton and my dad was Billy E. Quinton who served aboard the Eldorado from around 1949 until 1951. He was in Operations J division as a radio operator. Im working on my familys geneology and Im trying to get as much information about him as possible. Unfortunately, he passed away in March of 1999 and we miss him terribly. He would talk now and then about his service in Korea, but I never wrote it down and now Im going through his books and papers to try to grasp exactly what he did during his military service. If anyone remembers him and has any stories or information, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and service.
